August issue - radioactive cats

I liked the radioactive cat article. I have an old geiger counter (about 40 years old). It still clicks in the headset it came with, about one click every other second. I assumed that was background radiation. But - when I close the cover over the end of the Geiger Mueller tube, it still clicks. Try...

Re: LED stays on 24/7

Now let's recap a bit and put it together... Worse case…..move! Hi Lenp: Thanks for the detailed prescription. You know, I've suspected that the wiring guys may have had some newbie help, based on some things I've found. Some of the outlets were "upside down" - others not. Fixed now. The ...

Re: Direct backlight LED strips in 48" Samsung TV...

At $10 and free shipping, it seems it'd be hard to beat the price of that driver you listed with the link. I looked at a pic of the BN44-00852A supply/LED driver board, but it was too fuzzy to tell much. Not even sure if that's the correct supply anyway. I'm not really a TV guy. Anyway, hope it work...

It's just a plain old SPST wall switch. I took it out and looked at it, put the continuity tester on it, worked it a bunch. Absolutely nothing wrong with it AFAICT. Light is still off today.

Re: Direct backlight LED strips in 48" Samsung TV...

Hello Externet: Great project! That TV is thirty pounds (weight) - so I suspect you'll be trimming out the un-needed stuff. Would be a wrecking ball when it fell! From a quick survey on search sites, it looks like available info about that model is almost nil. But - like jwax mentioned, you could re...

Hello neighbor! You'll have slightly better seats than us, here in Cary, NC. I'll probably have to turn the (ham) radio on when Monday comes around, given what the article mentioned about sky-wave propagation.

Solar Eclipse. Have your room reserved yet?

I liked the article in Nuts/Volts about the coming solar eclipse (just five days away). I wonder how many people are going to travel to the total-eclipse zone for a view?

Re: LED stays on 24/7

Hmmmm.............. :? It sounds like a case of "Stray Voltage". From Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stray_voltage#Degraded_insulation_on_power_conductors ... With power off to the socket. Put your DMM(Digital Multi Meter) on AC Volts. Put your test leads on the inside & out...

Re: LED stays on 24/7

Are you saying that after you took the bulb out and tested the voltage, it was not lit when you put it back in. Time to take the fixture out and inspect the connections for polarity. Rather than using a DMM, use a non contact AC voltage probe. then you can check each wire independently and verify o...

Re: LED stays on 24/7

Hello haklesup, Thanks for the reply. Yes, it's a split breaker. The fixture that holds the LED is very old - from the late eighties. It's just a basic ceiling light. It's been on, night and day, for the three weeks since we twisted it into the socket. Today, I went to look for mysterious voltages, ...

Re: LED stays on 24/7

Maybe some kind of common-mode voltage? I guess that's easy enough to check.

LED stays on 24/7

I have a 40 watt equivalent LED that stays on (at about 1/10 output) even when the power switch is off, and even when the breaker to that circuit is shut off. 24/7 it runs, so I don't need a night lite. I understand how there could be RF, but I'm not near any kind of radio tower. And - it's only one...

Re: Buy or build

Yes, it's hard to justify building it yourself. I find myself buying a lot of cheap boards (Sparkfun, et al) ... but I usually also add self-built stuff to the mix. Some part of the thing will need a conversion, attenuation, or some other such thing. For the most part, I'm linking little boards toge...

Re: dead board index in this forun

Just took a look at the last page of the forum roster (page 128) - and see myself at the bottom. I noticed that most of the new members on that page have only one or a few posts. Likely, they had a single question to ask, that being their only reason for joining. Apparently, they (often) never come ...
