things goin' on at RS

I've heard from multiple sources, including employees, that Radio Shack is moving back toward more parts and tools in their stores. Anybody else hear this? I'm wondering what it might mean. Microcontroller kits? Class D stereo modules? Headphone amp parts? Forrest Mims III books? Sleeper bargains on...

Re: is everyone on vacation ?? no activity here since the 19

Modern Electronics was sort of resurrected from the old Popular Electronics by editor Art Salzberg, then later became MicroComputer Journal . This was another pretty good mag with enough hacker base that is was eventually taken over by the Midnight Engineering folks. I have a fairly complete set of...

Re: is everyone on vacation ?? no activity here since the 19

In no way is this an attempt to "pile on," it's just a comment prompted by reading some previous posts. I perceive N&V becoming less like the magazine of old (or R-E) and more like Circuit Cellar. Maybe that's by design; maybe that's just the state of contemporary electronics. Maybe so...

Re: 3 volt audio preamp?

I could dig and probably come up with some op amps, but the first chip that came to mind is the LM4808 headphone driver.

Re: TV Remote Control Sticking: *Solved*

When I load the video, I just change the channel at the TV controls. But if the video is already loaded, I have to get up off the sofa.

Re: TV Remote Control Sticking: *Solved*

I've been following this thread, because I too have a remote with similar symptoms. It's the remote for my NTSC TV, and it's really only needed to change the channel to Ch3 for an external input. And wouldn't ya know, it's the 3 button that has a problem. It has to be pressed very hard to work. I'll...

Re: 6V Sealed-lead-acid battery charger

The LM317 with a max 3V input/output differential? Is that being read correctly? I thought the differential was more like 40V. 3V sounds more like the minimum differential. How much current does this digital scale draw? I was thinking it wasn't that much, and the easiest/best charger would be simply...

Re: need help to find a manual or info.

Sorry I won't be as much help with docs or troubleshooting. I'm not as well versed in SMPSs as I'd like to be. Possibly any somewhat similar schematic you can find will be helpful. If the SMPS is dead, I'd check the switching transistors. The unit may have gotten connected wrong and blown the contro...

Re: need help to find a manual or info.

Seems this is a 2007 model made by either Kole Audio or Power Acoustik; part of their Nitric series.
If you go to this Kole Audio page you'll find a link for the manual of their latest Phanatik Series amps.
It shows the PH2-2000, with the same 370W per channel rating, as having three 25A fuses.

Re: I need a small, cheap 277vac to 12vdc LED driver

Check out the modules from Bias Power . They have some LED driver types that are rated up to 308VAC. I learned of these via obtaining a couple 14VDC 2W models from All Electronics. These seem so much more sane than transformerless power supplies. They are only about 1" square and 0.5" high.

Re: LED Outdoors

I can say I'm not aware of any likely problems. As far as I know, they use the same epoxy material for LEDs from IR to UV so indirect sunlight shouldn't be an issue. The two storage temp specs I have are both -40C to +85C; the operating temps are the same. To keep out moisture/humidity, I'd apply so...

Re: credit cards and plastic bags ???

Thanks MK. I considered the possibility but didn't think the bag was thick enough to make that much of a difference.
It's certainly easier to see the concept applied with the wax paper and UPC. Mystery solved! If I ever have this happen
at the store I'll get to play geek smarty-pants!

Re: credit cards and plastic bags ???

This is the first I've heard of this, but given a few moments thought my best guess is it has something to do with
the slickness of the bag. I hope someone has a definitive answer to this puzzler.

Re: Should I Repair This Portable Air Conditioner?

I would devote my resources to making some kind of stand/support to fit a regular window unit. It seems you've spent $1000 or more and still have problems. The sill may be vinyl, but there's solid house somewhere underneath that. Install an insulated ledge across the bottom of the sill. My window un...
