Re: amplification

fishing around an unknown PCB for an input to an amplifier without a schematic can be tricky but not impossible if you have some experience.
You can probably get away with simply paralleling the internal speaker with your external speaker. If there is too much noise on the external speakers or it ...

Re: cellphone antenna's

It is my understanding that Digital phones use the lowest power setting to achieve acceptable transmission quality. This saves power for the battery but sometimes causes the phone to have borderline connections. It is as though the signal strength bars can also represent the inverse of the output po...

Re: conductive traces on plastic

In production, they are probably silk-screened.
Silver pen might work (not knowing what plastic or how much bend. You might try coating the wire with nail polish (if not flexing too much) or silicone caulk (insulative and very compliant) to protect it from the oxidation, scratches and flaking.
M...

Re: Disk Capacity

In WAV format, 18 may be about right since this is an uncompressed format (unlike MP3) and the files would be very large.
Just look at the disk with Windows explorer and use the detail view on the files list. The file and directory size should be clear.

Re: transistor pinout

One way is a generic test you can do on any transistor.
Check for a diode between any two leads. Use a multimeter in diode check mode or ohmmeter mode. Since you already know they are PNP there should be a forward biased diode from C to B and E to B.
This identifies the Base for sure but you ma...

Re: cellphone antenna's

Those sticker antennas often cause the phone to go to full power even when the signal is strong thereby wasting power. Dispite the many testamonials by the makers, I have never seen a technical claim I could believe in. I also cannot believe in a "one size fits all" solution when it comes ...

Re: Using infrared reciever

Depends on the keyboard and driver software. Does your KB have a bunch of softkeys above the F keys. Look for a way to reprogram/reassign their functions.
Most wireless keyboards have macro keys that you can set to run a program. This program can be a PIF or BAT to run a sequence of commands.
T...

Re: Hints for a rookie writer?

Granted, 150 pages of heavily illustrated S/W manual. Not quite the same as margin to margin 10 point text.
If you keep ending up with long works then maybe that is what it takes. Surely there have been voluminous books on the subject of transistors. I have several on my shelf. I doubt I have read...

Re: pc gun principle?

I believe it works the same. They probably have to adjust the driver S/W for interlaced and non interlaced display modes but I believe the scanning is the same on an LCD, CRT and plasma display.
While there is no electron beam scanning, they do serially address each row of pixels in the display an...

Re: Components Equivalents

Have you tried the websites for each manufacturer. Most companies (and TI, National SC and Motorola do a great job)and many have CDROM that they will send you packed with datasheets and parts lists.
In general the sites have component selection guides where you input parameters and it gives a list...

Re: Internet over Cell Phone for Laptop

I use Verizon's express network occasionally. It is actually faster than 14.4 it can be nearly DSL speed but I found the reliability to be low. It often drops my connection and since it essentially disconnects the connection when not in use to save minutes, if a web page takes too long to respond, y...

Re: Hints for a rookie writer?

A book on alternate energy capture, storage and application might just sell pretty well as there is good general interest by those who would want to install or have installed one of these systems. This has much better market potential (voltage) :) than general purpose electronics projects and advice...

Re: Large EEPROM

DRAM, SDRAM and other high speed, high capacity memory is never easy to interface to and often require dedicated controllers. SRAM is much easier but more expensive and as you noted not always available in the size, package you want.
Have you considered a FLASH memory card? You can get sockets for...
