I would think you would need some sort of encoder system like a variable resistor or optical encoder. Or you could have the device return to a known position and then go to the desired point from there.

Try seeing what happens if you use a resistor. If that changes things then see what resistor gives you values you like and substitute a thermistor.

If I remember right all you need to do is connect the wires. There were ps/2 to AT and viceversa. It's a size thing.

A capacitor would conduct with ac and not with dc. That could be your filter.
