Re: Are most people here Electrical/Electronics engineers?

Professional: Traditionally it ment a field that required a four-year college degree or better plus a year or more of practice allowing one to take some kind of comprehensive test leading to certification or licensure of some kind in that field. Doctors, Lawyers, Architects, etc.
Now days, the ter...

Re: National Electric Code

Underwriter's Laboratories (UL) may be a source of some of the wattage limitations. 1650 watts seems to be a common maximum if I recall correctly. I used to be a salesperson at electrical and plumbing departments at a hardware store (OSH). They had almost a dozen models of room heaters etc, and all ...

Re: Electric Vehicles

A problem with conventional electric vehicles is that people are easily misled. A report may say the car will go up to 60 mph and up to 60 miles. A reasonable person might assume that they could go almost 60mph for almost 60 miles. However, the numbers for range and speed are usually extremes of opo...

Re: Auto starter motor

Starter motors are ment for short-term use at their rated voltage. A method around this I've seen is a 12v starter motor coupled with a 6v deep-discharge battery.

Re: Christmas lights

Seems like I had a set ten years or so ago and they stopped making them fairly quickly. I think the set I had was supposed to be low voltage, and all the bulbs flashed randomly. May have been a mixture of series and parallel circuit.
It worked okay for a while, but as the bulbs flashed randomly, t...

Re: X10 question

Are you saying you can't get the signal to work out there?
My understanding is that it isn't a wireless controll, but uses a signal traveling along the 110v line. Distance shouldn't matter much.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Funny radio shack story & question

We have a half dozen Rad Shacks in this town. I try to use the "techie" one when I can, even though out of the way. They don't treat you like a nerd (rhymes with t***) when looking at components. Or pondering design ideas. And they don't jump you as you enter the store, but allow you to gr...

The old computer keylocks are all keyed alike apparently, although not everyone knows that. I have such a key on my keyring for a removable hard drive.

Re: Keeping It Cool: Fans, Insulation, Peltier Cooling Modul

4. make the box as small as possible. the less surface area the better. You might even consider a short cylinder as a box to further limit surface area. You might even be able to use pipe insulation, although the R value is not great.

Re: Keeping It Cool: Fans, Insulation, Peltier Cooling Modul

I'd like to mention that a COMBINATION of insulation and heat transfer is needed.
As an architect, I know a bit about heat transfer and insulation. I've even been thinking of a solid state solar water heater using Peltier junctions, but found that they weren't that efficient, and that they don't w...
