Great link, Philba. It appears I could build one of those for the same amount of money or less than what I could build a serial data logger for. Looking into sourcing the parts in the US...

I'm willing to try either method. The firmware programming part doesn't scare me as much as the circuit design does. I'm a full-time programmer and can write assembly when I have to. Despite the added complexity of using an SD card or another flash memory type, I like the idea of not being limited t...

Alas, can't even get the parts required to build one of the devices in the link above. That era of Palm devices has gone stale.

Oh well, my Visor heads back to the junk drawer...

simple RS-232 data logger

I have a GPS (Garmin eTrex) that streams NMEA data over RS232 if you put it in the right mode. I'm using it to map hiking trails. Thus far, I've simply been using the track log the eTrex has built in, but the accuracy leaves something to be desired. I'd like to capture the raw NMEA values it's capab...

Thanks for all the great feedback! I'm going to look into the incentives from Uncle Sam and see whether they make this more affordable. I may also just use a generator while it's simply a vacation spot and I'm infrequently. Perhaps renewable energy will become more ubiquitous and/or power lines will...

Live off the grid...fat chance?

I'm looking at buying property that's 10+ miles from the nearest power pole. PG&E is happy to run power to me for $75k/mi...which makes it a bit outside my grasp. So, I'm looking into Solar power - PV and Wind with storage. We use about 17,000 kwh/per year at home now. So, if we tightened our be...

I just put a DSL filter in line (Excelsus Z-200SM) and the problem is completely gone. So, it looks like a simple low-pass filter does the trick. If you have a schematic for one you'd recommend, please post.

Thanks!

They are simple voice lines. The highest frequencies will likely come in the form of fax transmissions. These lines won't be used for anything like computer modems or DSL.

There's a thought. I've got a bunch of DSL filters laying around. Would one of them serve well as a low-pass filter?

There's at least two stations that come through pretty clearly. I think this means I'd need at least two such filters for each of the 8 lines I'm attempting to fix. Then, I'd need to add another each time we heard a new station. Is there a filter that I could build that would work for the entire AM ...

Update! A buddy of mine is a heavy-equipment operator and uses a GPS-based system that directs him as to how he needs to set his dozer's blade (angle, depth, etc.) such that he can move earth without the need for surveyor's markers and such. Apparently, it's accurate to the fraction of an inch in 3-...

RF interference on phone (CO) line

I picked up a channel bank on EBay for use with Asterisk (open source PBX). It works fine excepting the fact that when I use it I can hear a local AM radio station well enough be thorougly annoying. Sometimes I can hear two or three of them. The unit is an Adtran 750. I hear Adtran is offering new F...

Thanks, Philba. I will be hooking this up to a server I've spent a few bucks on...can't be too careful. I'll be driving it via a web interface in order to press another computer's reset button. We're doing some debugging and the remote guys have hung the box enough times to make me sick of pressing ...
