Re: HELP UV lamp needed
Without me doing the actual legwork of checking out each of these sites for what you want, try:<p> http://www.dogpile.com/info.dogpl/search/web/%2522germicidal%2Blamp%2522 <p>Like chicken soup for a cold, it might help, it might not. But it can't do any harm.<p>As it happens, I was poking around loo...

Re: Fixing magnetic damage to PC monitor
Darn good points, Dean. Sometimes this stuff gets so second-nature that one forgets to mention the basics. AC, of course, is automatic with the soldering gun technique.<p>A-a-a-and, I remember using the bulk tape eraser on that monitor for a first try. Mayhaps I got it too close and warped the matri...

Re: Fixing magnetic damage to PC monitor
I've used a bulk tape eraser too. Wave it around and twist it around a little as you slowly withdraw it from the screen. <p>The best results I've had was to take an almost-screen-sized one-turn coil of 14-/12-ga solid wire bent to fit into my 300 W Weller soldering gun tip clamps and then at right a...

Okay. My son said he just asked for carbon arc torch rods and they knew what he wanted.

Re: amperage or current
The "-age" suffix used to bother the heck out of me, too, but as I got older and mellower, I decided that use of the terms "ohmage," "wattage," and "amperage" were akin to the perfectly respectable "voltage," and paid homage to the respective scienti...

Re: Thermocouple Welder (Nov 2004, p24)
My memory fails on exactly what they were called... maybe "carbon torch rods" or "carbon arc torch rods," or some variant like that, but I'll check with my son. I think he bought a couple a few years ago --maybe there's a modern nomenclature for them. <p>I was referring to a &quo...

Re: Question
In the back of my storage locker I have a smoke pump and injection chamber which might help. You put the fried device in the chamber and start up the smoke pump and force the smoke back into the component. This usually fixes it.<p>(Yeah, yeah, I know, all you old-timers have heard that one before.)<...

Re: Thermocouple Welder (Nov 2004, p24)
OK re carbon-zinc "Le Clenche" cells. I'd have gone to my local welding shop and picked up one or two 1/4" - 3/16" carbon rods --used for brazing, etc. They usually have a copper jacket along their length which evaporates/melts as the rod is used up. The jacket also reinforces th...

Re: Thermocouple Welder (Nov 2004, p24)
:-) Where on earth did you find a carbon-zinc cell? :-)<p>I used to do this a lot with a TIG welder. I have not read the article, so this may be redundant. You twist the wires together, establish the arc, and slowly bring the twisted wires together to the arc, with the ends of the wires pointing tow...

Re: RS 22-812 METER SERIAL DATA TRANSMISSION
Thanks, philba! That was pretty much what I needed to figure out what segments are on. Now I don't have to make a "decrypting" project out of it.

Re: RS 22-812 METER SERIAL DATA TRANSMISSION
I'd run it for days, at the most, and I have a couple of old machines around. I've used the game port on an XT for this purpose many a moon ago. Right now, I'd like to use an old Compaq 286 SLT "laptop" since it's a small and neat-looking package and economical to run. <p>("Laptop!&qu...

Re: RS 22-812 METER SERIAL DATA TRANSMISSION
The data set seems to be for every segment on the meter face --which is duplicated on the computer monitor. That's why I said it would be a pain in the kerwunkies --sure, I could do as you sugggest, but being (a) lazy; and (b) time-constrained, I thought someone else might have done the legwork/logi...

RS 22-812 METER SERIAL DATA TRANSMISSION
Happy New Year!<p>Maybe this isn't a good time to ask a question since with everybody offering good wishes back and forth, my question will drop to the bottom of the board.<p>But:<p>1. I have a Radio Shack 22-812 digital multimeter which has a serial port on it. I use it occasionally for various lon...

Darned fine shootin', Chris, which attests not only to the accuracy of the bull barrel, but to your skill in handling --breath control, concentration, trigger control, wind doping, etc. As the saying goes, "the match goes to those who can solve their problems best."<p>But for myself, for s...
