Re: Getting started in Microcontrollers
I'm in the same boat as terri. I would also like to learn uc's. I have gotten a cheap kit from eo-tek that utilizes a 8051 uc. I haven't gotten the time to play with it yet, and my question is, is this a good choice for a "first time"? Also, would it be easier to learn useing C or would it...

Re: Making hydrogen from water & DC
I'm afraid that this post is going to go on forever!?! All because a wanna-be conman says he can get 10 megawatts out of a horse trailer!?! I don't understand why anybody would give this guy the time of day.

I believe that you should receive a medal for that one, Chris! I know where a can get a smog pump, and I already have the motor and the Freon can! As far as the bic pen goes, I have a whole case, since I have this terrible habit of leaving my pens laying about anywhere. Thanks for the great idea!

Re: AC Motor Control
Chris, like I said I do believe that you know what your talking about, but I would have to believe that that was for older controllers and maybe also for low power control systems. The new controllers are of the PWM variety. They take the AC power right into a rectifier and convert everything over t...

Re: AC Motor Control
Chris,
I am sure that you know what you are talking about, but as far as industrial variable frequency drives go, they are all of the pulse width modulated variety.

Re: AC Motor Control
Harold, here is a very good primer on VFD's http://www.baldor.com/pdf/manuals/780-1002.pdf .
Also check out "The Cowern Papers". http://www.baldor.com/support/literature_manuals.asp
Again, good luck!

Re: AC Motor Control
I don't have a phd on this stuff, but I work with it every day. VFD's are just pulse width modulated IGFET's. They work excatly like a DC PWM drive, except for the fact that they are making a facsimile of a sine wave instead of DC. Basically, you start out with a carrier frequency of usually between...

Re: AC Motor Control
----All motors run on A.C.. ---- Huh?????<p> I too think that it would be neat to run a small car with an AC motor. I did check into it some and have reason to think that all you would need is a commercial VFD. Connect your 12 V. batteries in series to get about 300 Volt DC. Feed that into the DC bu...

Need good soldering iron. What brand?
I'm using a heavy old soldering iron with no temperature control. I am wanting to purchase a soldering/reworking station. What is a good choice in the entry-level market? Or maybe entry-level is not a good idea?

Re: Laser for CNC router?
Tinkerer, you seem to be the guy I need to talk to! No, the money doesn't scare me to bad. I must confess that I don't know to much about lasers and would need to book up on all the safety precautions! And yes, I would like to do the same type of cutting/engraving as what you have been doing! I to h...

Re: Laser for CNC router?
Well bsparky, I don't have any real experience with servos, but I was always under the impression that they can be much more powerful than a stepper ( off the shelf parts ). Also the feedback would correct any error if you stalled. Technically, you could put a feedback system on a stepper, but if yo...
