Theoretical Max Transfer of 38kHz IR

I'm trying to get a better understanding of *how* IR remotes transfer data. I understand that it works and have followed the instructions for a test circuit, but I'm curious to understand what's going on. My goal is to understand how fast you can transfer data that way. Here's how it seems to work t...

Monitoring your home's energy usage

This is cool. http://www.diykyoto.com/ It shows your home's current energy use in watts and updates its display instantly. It can also show your usage in british pounds so you can instantly see the cost savings of switching to ccfl bulbs, turning off lights, etc. Someone should make a North American...

i seen some on the net, but no working link to them,,they changed colors in unison,,i'd love to find a set that the leds change color individually. that would be cool... I've seen both. At first I though this will be a great way to get colorful LEDs cheap, but the more I think about it, the more I ...

I've seen rgb ones at Menards. Cheap too. I can't tell if they're one RGB led or three LEDs. They seem to fade between colors. On a side note, they had a tree with LEDs already built into it for lights. The LEDs were bluish white, but the PWM on the lights was too slow and you could see a noticeable...

I posted this msg right before bed, and after I laid down, I realized the flaw.

If you're using a $5 uC, it's no big deal to solder it into the circuit and pick up a new one for your next circuit - however, with this, you'd probably only use it for non-permanent purposes, such as experimentation.

very interesting arm/usb dev board

Saw this advertised in the Dec N&V that came today. www.coridiumcorp.com They sell a 60MHz ARM dev board for $49 that has an integral basic compiler. They say it runs up to 13m lines of code per second (they admit that is the fastest, and many functions will go slower). It uses a USB to serial c...

Altair kit

Make has a link to an Altair kit that looks quite good. It's not exactly cheap, but man does it look cool: http://www.makezine.com/blog/archive/2006/11/altair_8800_com.html That is a little before my time (I think I was 3 or 4 when that came out) but I had a Vic 20 and a TRS 80 Coco 2 (with cassette...

Thanks, that's remarkable that they're so inexpensive. And what's the story with so many of those sites saying, "call or e-mail for pricing?" Are they afraid of people seeing their prices and leaving the site? I'm going to contact the company for details, but this one, http://www.happcontr...

USB Coin-op accepter

I've been searching, but based on the pitiful number of results I must not be searching for the right thing. Certainly these have to exist... I'd like to make a device that when you put a quarter in it it signals a computer via USB, or even serial, or even just registers a positive click on some swi...

Electronic Shopping in San Francisco

My job with Ubuntu requires me to travel occasionally. Since Des Moines IA is not exactly the epicenter of electronics parts selection, I like to stop and pick up small parts while in the bigger cities - things for which the shipping makes it not worth the effort. (for example, I bought usb connecto...

help finding eagle parts for db9

I'm still trying to find my way around Eagle. I really hate that they make it so hard to find stuff. I've got this: http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=429 I want to put it on a circuit board. I can recreate the part, but my goal is to learn where stuff is, so wondered if a...

I got mine a couple days late, but it was worth the wait. This particular issue rocked (of course, haven't tried the experiments yet). The balancing robot was extremely informative, I was holding my breath for the update to the high voltage pic, the Nixie experiments were also informative and writte...

Dell has their B110 right now for $279. Another $29 for shipping. Go to officemax or tiger direct or compusa and you should be able to get a 17" lcd for a little over $100. New. Warranty. More hardware than necessary. A license for XP (which you can make look like Win 98) in case he ever wants ...

What do you think of this camera? It says it has a serial interface and is 460800 baud. I could stream that over the WiPort pretty easily couldn't I? That's a cool camera, but you'll need to make sure you can transfer at least 460800 baud, and really, unless they're saying "a 460800 baud conne...
