Translucent Containers Needed - Help!
The images are a small upside down translucent plastic bottle. Inside the bottle is a fork handle with riveted black veneers. You can easily see a rivet through the milky colored plastic. I need several much larger round plastic containers with similar opacity. There will be a light source. I want t...

Re: CFL vs. LED Light Bulbs
Yes, you're correct sghioto. Because Soft White CFLs were manufactured in huge quantities they were cheap. Bright White CFLs were always more expensive. That low eBay price for 10 "Natural Bright White" LED bulbs was too good to be true. If I want Bright White LED bulbs they are going to cost more. ...

CFL vs. LED Light Bulbs
My eyeglasses are very expensive because the prescription is complex. The lense includes a prism. Many years ago eyeglasses with prisms looked and felt horrible because the lense was thick and heavy. Modern (and costly) plastic lenses are remarkably thin and the prism is not visible. In my house I'v...

Re: USB Hub Power Supply Causing Huge Problem!
JerryR, your adapter idea worked!! The shortest USB extension cables I have in my shop are 24 inches, so I used one just to test the idea. I cut away about 1 inch of the insulating jacket. Cut the coaxial drain wires and peeled off the foil shield. After snipping the +5v (red) wire I sealed the cut...

Re: USB Hub Power Supply Causing Huge Problem!
JerryR, I haven't tried anything yet, but I think you've got the solution! I'm a little confused about a how you constructed an adapter. There are M-to-F and F-to-M adapters. Adapters are monolithic blobs of plastic and metal. How can you cut the +5v connection without destroying one of the adapter...

USB Hub Power Supply Causing Huge Problem!
I apologize for this lengthy post. An uncommon problem requires a lengthy explanation. My best friend of 30 years teaches english literature at a local college. He likes to read books and newspapers. He must use computers and cell phones, but he would rather not! His home office desktop was built b...

Re: Junk or Repair CD Player?
The very first white noise device I owned was simply a fan inside an upside down birthday cake with adjustable slots. As a teenager that had trouble sleeping, I remember wacking the thing many times when the fan blade or motor needed adjustment or lube. My dog barked when the motor didn't sound righ...

Junk or Repair CD Player?
I've used white noise as a sleep aid since I was a teenager. You can buy a single purpose gizmo that plays several sounds like rain, ocean waves, etc. About ten years ago I purchased white noise CD's. Every few months I burn one or two copies from the original. Since "great sound" is not required wh...

Re: Need Appliance Service PDF or Something Similar
Thank you Miguel. The upper sliding shelf (it's really a big tray) has an ice bin that lifts out easily. However, the shelf cannot be tilted up and out. There is a center tongue & groove rail. The shelf slides on that rail. The only was to slide that shelf off the rail is to remove the entire freeze...

Need Appliance Service PDF or Something Similar
Guys, I know this is not really a subject for Nuts & Volts. I've posted on two appliance repair forums with no replies. These forums have dozens of service technicians as members. I should have been swamped with replies. 16 months ago my sister purchased a new refrigerator. After a few weeks there w...

Re: A Slightly Uncommon Monitor Cleaning Problem
I just returned to this forum and I started to read the first sentence of my post. Yikes! I omitted the word "you" when I typed "Do remember the original recipe for cleaning LCD monitors?" It's kind of embarassing to mess up the first sentence in a post! Maybe I should retire my brain, or something....

A Slightly Uncommon Monitor Cleaning Problem
Do you remember the original recipe for cleaning LCD monitors? I subscribed to PC Magazine and P C World for decades. Both magazines suggested a 1:1 mixture of distilled water and white vinegar. Countless websites still recommend this recipe for cleaning monitors. Years ago I switched to a Bausch & ...

Re: Save My Desktop - If You Can!
When you finish building a desktop, there are usually unused SATA ports on the motherboard. I tried the optical drive cable in each unused port. The BIOS always listed the port number correctly during bootup, but it didn't fix the problem with XP. I started opening some boxes in my workshop with old...

Re: Save My Desktop - If You Can!
Janitor Tzap, are you trying to say the procedure I followed was not enough? You mentioned completely removing the mobo and shorting all the electrolytics with a 470K resistor. Before I disconnect everything and pull the mobo from the tower I must know the odds of success. Is there at least a 50/50 ...

Re: Save My Desktop - If You Can!
TRIED THE SIMPLE FIX FIRST This is the command to unregister a file: regsvr32 -u <path>\<filename> The document from the Sophos Community says this: "As a workaround to a problem you may need to register, or unregister, a .DLL (or other) file." Notice the words "or other file." XP Pro will only unr...
