Re: Lost TV remote control action...

Do you have access to another TV of the same brand? If you do that could at least remove the TV as a possibility. Have you pointed the remote at a digital camera to verify the LED is still good? The LED being bad doesn't fit the symptoms necessarily but the more you eliminate the less you have to lo...

Re: Lost TV remote control action...

As for the TV remote, have you checked all caps and solder joints? Battery connections? Button contacts? Any of these may cause intermittent operation. That about sums up my remote troubles. I had a remote that behaved in much the same way. The remote had a cracked lead on the crystal, low batterie...

Re: Broadband Provider problems.....

Hi. If of any reference, I received on the mail an 'award' of $2 from ATT losing a suit for not supplying their ISP data rate as specified to millions of customers. So it seems that happens, cutting corners to their clients. Part of the problem is the stupid marketing wording of "high speed interne...

Re: Broadband Provider problems.....

I've never had a problem with slow downs from the two broadband providers I've used. The only time I get slow speeds is when the remote server doesn't have the bandwidth available. I would think a phone call could help the situation but if they're the only provider in the area anything you could say...

Rotating Magnetic Storage Repair: Sprinrite Drive Imaging: Acronis True Image My personal favorite is System Rescue CD, it can do everything the pay programs can do and more. It's comprised of dozens of open source tools for managing all aspects of a modern (or ancient) computer. You can find more i...

Re: AC Paper Shedder Motor Failure

Shredders are so underpowered, at least the ones you buy at the office supply store are. More accurate you could not be, the motor is about the size of what you find in electric pencil sharpeners. Interesting about the school shredder. I got a commercial grade shredder from a mortgage company and a...

Re: Need help with digital clock mod

I've seen displays with four full digits on the face but only enough LEDs to display a one. Some clock use segments F&E to display AM/PM and alarm set. Have you tried to light all segments of the tens hours digit manually?

Re: AC Paper Shedder Motor Failure

Good points, thanks. After some more checking I found that the motor still spins in the proper direction as set by the switch. The switch is in good working order. There isn't continuity between the motor frame and anything else I could probe. The only other parts on the control board other than the...

Re: Symantec activity... How to tell ?

My last encounter with Norton was years ago so I can't comment on whether there is or isn't some visual indicator to it's activities. As perhaps a last resort you could open the settings dialog and check if/when automatic scans are scheduled. You could then anticipate the inevitable slowdown.

Re: How would you tell the cardinal points ?

Would any of these methods work for you? East - West Without A Compass

I slightly remember a process similar to the ones linked that was extremely accurate and proposed to be the method used by ancient Egyptians to align the pyramids. The full details escape me now though.

AC Paper Shedder Motor Failure

I was using my paper shedder today when it suddenly started humming. My first thought was that it was jammed. I switched the shedder to reverse and still the same noise. To fix the jam I opened up the shedder housing and couldn't find anything wrong. To further investigate I switched it on and notic...

Re: to project or not to project....

I've used similar displays in the past and they work well. The parts do require more than a keyboard interface though. Communicating with the chip is a breeze if you have microcontroller experience. The HDSP-2531 should be easier to work with than what I used as it has a built in character set. Do y...

Re: touch-tone telephone voice user interfaces.VUI,IVR

Do you have any microcontroller experience? With a uC it's a straight forward project. You need a voice recorder chip or ADC and EEPROM with pre-recorded prompts, circuitry to detect ringing and off-hook conditions, a way to take the phone off hook and a DTMF decoder or decoding through software. On...

Re: RC Lawnmower Ideas

Are you committed to this being a DIY project or is this a case of I don't care how I get there but I want it? If the latter is true there are several ready made robotic mowers that range in price from $275 to $3000+. The features range from simple bump detection for a fenced yard and you need to ke...
