Re: whats the problem ??

but.. when i click a link. it still goes thru outlook express somehow.. i This sounds a lot like another file association bugaboo. Like an email link is trying to open as a web page?? Take a look at Firefox Tools>Options then the Applications tab. Scroll down and see what application mailto is asso...

Re: programs running?

I'm not really sure what your intent is. You can shut down the program by using the Task Manager. You can prevent it from "autoloading" at bootup by changing its *.exe filename to *.ex_ Win7 has a Startup folder if you go to Start>All Programs and scroll through the list. Whether your target program...

Re: trouble e-mailing photos??

FYI I tried the second option above and it did not work. Selecting IE only gave file options for *.html and similar variations. Because a browser isn't really a graphics viewer app... You can use it as one though. I do sometimes, with drag & drop. Chrome is getting all the headlines. What turned you...

Re: Where does the magnetic field go???

Yes, we're on the same page here. Maybe not the answer the op was expecting, but in many ways inductor action is as complicated as active semiconductor components. And to say: The electromagnetic field exists around all the current-carrying conductors. An inductor is designed to store some of that e...

Re: Where does the magnetic field go???

My thinking is that from an electronics pov using the phrase "store energy" is adequate and practical. But the question was more physics oriented, and "store" is likely not the best term to use in understanding the answer to the op's question. The energy isn't stored in the field or the inductor; it...

Re: trouble e-mailing photos??

It sounds like your file associations got messed up when you uninstalled Chrome. You didn't specify what your operating system is or what program you want to use for images, but I'll wing it and give a (BGates-approved Windows) solution. Open Windows Explorer and locate one of the problem image file...

I don't believe a magnetic field can store energy. Remember, either the field or conductor has to move for work to be (or
potential to be) performed. The capacitor is different because you've actually moved some electrons.

Re: Using CAT5 cable for USB gadget ?

Again, I don't know what your transfer needs are, so my opinion is greatly generalized. That said, with the wireless repeater I would take a close look at its capabilities and customer reviews. My brief look suggested that at your distance you might only get a slow USB1 connection. I'm no Luddite; I...

Re: USB question

The March 2011 issue of Everyday Practical Electronics has an article on building a 'Manual 2-Way USB Device Switch' for connecting 2 computers to 1 peripheral. More info on request. Do you need a full blown LAN? I don't know about Apple, but Windows will allow you to set up an ad hoc network with j...

Re: info please re computer backup memory

I concur. Get a 500Gb external USB hard drive for less than a c-note. It'll fit in a pocket.
I went that route and it's worked without any hassles. I'm eyeballing those 1Tb drives now...
I use the SD cards and memory sticks for everyday non-critical backups and such.

Re: Using CAT5 cable for USB gadget ?

I remember reading hardcopy recently concerning USB extenders. I can't remember where I read it though. A quick search online gave results such as this: Sewell Direct There is a wide range of prices on this page. I'm curious what the different innards look like. The cheapest options appear to be sim...

Re: electric fence noise interference problem...

Wow... I could probably ask a long series of questions about each system. This industrial-grade fence works by zapping grounded livestock to keep them in, correct? If the noise is truly coming in through the power lines (i.e. it's not RF transmitted) I'd think there's nothing to do but block/filter ...

Re: Is this forum dying?

I'm still around also... I've cut back on all my net surfing, but still check in here regularly. I'm quiet, though, unless I have something worth saying. It's probably better if I don't start any commentary on the state of the hobby/forums/magazines/etc. I could probably go on and on, both good and ...
