Re: AC Motor Drive

Your post piqued my interest for two reasons: 1) AC servo motors are plentiful, but hobby-grade AC servo drivers are not, 2) off-grid inverters are pricey. I searched high and low for a decent pure-sine-wave inverter design that someone had open-sourced before conceding defeat and buying one off-the...

Re: SSD Hard Drives, Anybody use them?

I use them in laptops because they speed boot-up significantly. I've steered clear of them otherwise due to their limited lifespan and expense.

Re: Air/Steam Engine Conversion

John, I've been thinking about the heat/solenoid valve problem and am wondering whether a suitable replacement could be fabbed instead of purchased (almost $100/per, I think). I like the idea of an MCU-controlled steam engine, but the cost of steam-rated solenoid valves looks pretty restrictive. Per...

Re: info please re computer backup memory

Bear, If I'm not mistaken, a "Smart Card" is actually an authentication mechanism rather than a storage device. However, if you are looking at the slots that look about the size of a stick of gum, I think I know what you mean. Those are flash memory slots, they come in different flavors. USB sticks ...

Re: Windows 7 RAM Problem

No amount of spam will divert me from this forum (though being too darn busy sure limits my visits and posts). I just signed up with diybandmill.org. I had to ask a moderator nicely for a login via email, they have disabled the self-signup function of phpBB completely, presumably in an effort to cur...

Re: DVD Ripping Software

It has a convert/save function that can transcode your media into various formats. I use it all the time.

Glad you have things working, regardless.

MrAl,

Have you looked at VideoLan.org? It does the DVD part and then some.

Re: Is this forum dying?

It could be related to the down economy. I have fewer hours these days to push my projects along, as such I have fewer things to ask about. Perhaps that's part of the reason others are posting less.

Is this a serious plea for help or a veiled act of self-promotion?

Dale,

Here's what I'm up to:

I'm pretty sure an ON led is what starts current flowing, no?

Re: 4n35 collector wired to TIP31c base?

I'm using four of them to drive a stepper.

The stepper coils are 2.5 ohms. Since my PS is 13.5v, it appears that I might be exceeding Ic (5A). Does that mean (theoretically) that the base of the TIP31 is drawing the full 1A?

4n35 collector wired to TIP31c base?

Noob question here: I found a circuit while Googling that has me connecting a 4n35 collector to a TIP31c base. If I'm reading the data sheets correctly, 4n35 Ic has a max rating of 100mA and TIP31c IB can draw up to 1 amp. There should be a 2N2222 or something between, correct? The fact that I haven...

Re: Controlling relay via the web

Browse your local thrift stores for a WRT54G-flavor router. I've purchased one for as little as $5. There are a number of posts about powering a relay with one at http://www.openwrt.org.

Re: [OT] Career advice

psycho, It would be irresponsible to discourage you from getting a degree, I highly recommend one. But while you're working on one, here are some ideas: I work with plenty of people in IT that don't have a degree at all or do have one in something unrelated. The VP of our division at my last day gig...
