Re: Drilling rare earths...

A person showed me a cool trick. He dropped a rare earth magnet (sphere) down a copper pipe of just a bit larger diameter. It fell through very slowly because its movement induced a current in the copper pipe which in turn created an opposing magnetic field that slowed the magnets fall. Copper beca...

Nuts & Volts Circulation Numbers?

I thought that most mags posted their circulation volume somewhere on the "masthead" page. That does not seem to be true anymore. Does any one know the approximate monthly the sales volume for N&V magazine? Servo magazine? How about digital copies? With this entire hobby seemingly disa...

Re: Drilling rare earths...

Well, ...done. It was matter of patience. Took several minutes each magnet, changing drill bits every 30 seconds, and rocking the drill angle constantly. Now my garage doors stay closed. Shavings -actually neodymium powder- is easy to remove. Duct tape picks it off. Hey, Externet, Please te...

Re: Where does the magnetic field go???

This is an old thread, but I noticed that the equations for stored energy are missing. I bet the O.P. is long gone. For an inductor: E = 1/2 * L * I^2 For a capacitor: E = 1/2 * C * V^2 E is energy in Joules (or Watt-Seconds, same thing). L is inductance in Henries. C is capacitance in Farads....

MOSFET Reality Check

Wow! I've had one of them there "epiphanies". I've been wrong about MOSFET current characteristics for a long time. I was under the impression that MOSFETs were not subject to secondary breakdown because "they are not current hogs like bipolar transistors". This is quoted because...

Re: static charged drink

and all this time i thought moisture kills static well i guess this explains how lightning generates itself... go figure... Atomic weight of H is 1. Atomic weight of O is 16. Atomic weight of a H2O molecule is therefore 18. There are 6.02 X 10^23 molecules of H2O in 18 cc of water. I did so...

Re: static charged drink

Remember that pure water is a poor conductor of electricity. So are amber and glass rods. We're discussing static electricity, charges that (AFAIK) travel on the surface of insulators and conglomerate on pointed parts. It's been said that you can immerse your PC power supply into pure water and it ...

Re: static charged drink

I know which experiment your talking about. Thou... If I remember it correctly, they tried several differing types of water. And depending upon the mineral content in the water. Would give different rates of conductivity, and static build up. Signed: Janitor Tzap Here's the equipment setup: ...

Re: static charged drink

A stream of water can generate static, like a pop machine dribbling coke into your glass. I've forgot the video on youtube where I saw this strange phenomenon but you can find similar experiments on youtube by searching for "water static charge". This one from France would be an example: h...

Re: 12/24 DC motor help needed

Whenever I'm stumped, I can usually find an answer by investigating more deeply. Take it apart and look at the construction. (ie: Do some reverse engineering.) Ohm out the wiring. See how many independent windings there and the resistance of each winding. If some of the wires are winding taps, then ...

Bob Pease And Jim Williams both gone within a week of each other. What a great loss to the analog electronics world! I just found out that Tony Van Roon of "Tony's Website!" also died recently, Feb 14, 2011. http://www.sentex.ca/~mec1995/index.htm It's a good place for various hobby circu...

Re: my lightning rods paid off sunday night !

jwax - they are roof mounted.. 24 - 100watt panels Wow! At Fry's approximate price of $5.00/watt, you have 12,000$ invested just in panels. The big question: Is the system paying off? Or would have been better to have invested the cash elsewhere and bought electricity from the power company? In you...

You don't want to be this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-ksAGvXsK4 What are those big stains are that instantly appear on the concrete both times he gets zapped? I wonder if this video has been edited. I think he would have headed back home to get a new pair of pants if those huge stains wer...

Re: simple design thermal wattmeter ?

I would'nt be too quick at putting the man down can we get back to finding a good method of measuring the power output instead of jumping all over this guy. you feel multiplying is erroneous, ok how do we find the real output. forget about what the circuit is for and focus on how to find truth. oth...

Re: simple design thermal wattmeter ?

Dimbulb: You didn't say what frequency range your signals are.(?) What is a THERMAL wattmeter? Do you measure the temperature rise in a resistor? If you have a resistive load, you can just change the scale of a voltmeter. P = V^2 / R. If you are driving a load with reactances, the current will be ou...
