Re: Second hard drive
I would check the boot order in the BIOS and see if the BIOS is pointing to that drive to boot from. Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately I didn't speak clearly enough. Without the password _nothing_ happens. No BIOS access, no exceptions. If I could access the BIOS I would have used the bootable linu...

Re: Second hard drive
Thanks for the further input guys. The "manage" option didn't do it, but the '98 boot disk did. I only managed to reformat one of the two I have- the other wouldn't "fix". Between the two of them, when the big one is attached to the laptop I'm interrogated for a password. Maybe t...

Re: Second hard drive
Thanks for the input. Unfortunately I'm still at square zero. The Physical Hardware (tm) is plugged and pulling power from the supply, humming softly. I go to control panel and tell it to install new hardware, which tells me that I have two (count 'em on the list, they're both there by some string t...

Second hard drive
I'm trying to reformat and install stuff on a laptop hard drive with my gateway/w2k. The hardware installer sees that it's there, the BIOS sees it just fine too- but I can't get at it. What gives?

Re: Playing with a sick Ford Escape hybrid...
Please, stop playing with it. From my job as an "emissions inspector" (tailpipe sniffer, long ago) I learned that Fords have suicidal engine computers. Couple this with steer by wire and driving becomes a criminal act of premeditated recklessness with chance of murder. BTW, I wonder what &...

Re: ipod touch with a different OS
Specifically vague maybe. Instead of a media player that happens to be able to keep a calender, I'd like to see it as a pocket sized computer sans keyboard. I know that 99% of people's needs are taken care of by apps that are already written, but I'm not them. I'm hoping to be able to run C apps so ...

ipod touch with a different OS
One of rackets where I work is "pride points" that we can spend on junk in the catalog. I've been ignoring them for a while and now there's enough to buy a toy or two. Anyway, I was thinking about the ipod touch but I don't want to be chained to the istore and buy apps that don't do what I...

Re: Changing my religion- to linux
Thank you CeaSaR. That gave me some hope, but I don't think it solved it. I did write a startup for the thinkpad, and it started to do it's thing but stopped because the power management settings prevented it from something. Now I am thinking about pulling the hard drive out and reloading something ...

Re: Changing my religion- to linux
I'm getting over the frustration of lost and destroyed files. I'd like to give another go at installing (smaller) linux, but the laptop wom't boot from anything. I gave it a new CMOS battery, but it still tells me errors 161 and 163 and stalls. Is there a key I should be able to press to get into a ...

Re: New(ish) Gateway computer
Thanks all for your assistance. I stopped by a computer shop on my trip south and the folks there managed to force feed a driver to it- not the one that matched the model number but a later one that works by good luck. Haklesup, I'm sorry I wasn't clear on this (not that it matters anymore). I don't...

Re: Changing my religion- to linux
Now it's bricked. I can't even get into the BIOS. Errors 00161 and 00163, then it gives me the bird. The CMOS battery still tests good.

New(ish) Gateway computer
I think I'm stressing out too much about this. I recently acquired a computer for myself so that I don't have to keep using the monstrosity in the living room. Unfortunately, I can't get all the drivers for it. What I (think I) know about it so far is the tag on the back reads "ATXAEG LX3 E6000...

Re: And now for something completely.. er.. Different?
I applied for a job there many years ago. I don't know if they refused me because I knew electronics or because I have more conscience than ambition.

Re: Changing my religion- to linux
What brand and model computer are you trying to install to? Are you burning the ISO to CD or DVD media? Thinkpad 380XD, CD only. I have something running now, but it takes twelve minutes to start and took3.8G of hard drive space; only about ten times what it replaced! It also says that there are se...

Re: Changing my religion- to linux
I not a believer yet. I tried the "Graphic Installer" and that got hung up at 74% too, but it was "locales" or something like that. I have it going again with the "Netinst" version, but I have a bad feeling about it all. The first time I tried to install it as a seconda...
