Re: Radiant Energy Device Not So Free

Didn't Niki Tesla have some kind of device like this? I think I remember he took it to JP Morgan for backing & Morgan rejected him 'cause there was no way for JP to make money off of it?

Re: A Simple TV Remote with an ALL-ON Button?

Yep, the Sony referenced above is a learning remote and although I'm sure there are IR formats it won't do I have yet to find one. It also has an "extensive liibrary" of pre stored formats but I've never found one that works properly for any device I tried, right off the bat, not even Sony...

Re: A Simple TV Remote with an ALL-ON Button?

Good Day Folks, Not as hard a problem as it might seem. Sony makes a remote control, RM-VL600 that runs about $25-$30. Sony claims that it has an extensive code library and is fully set-up and compatable w/ Sony equipment. Not true on both accounts but it is very programmable and as long as you're w...

Re: composite video pattern generator

G'day Folks, There is a DVD that supplies test patterns etc. for TV adjustment. I think it's called "DVD Video Essentials". DVD players are cheap now & could supply a variety of outputs. It's what I do when I need a test pattern. Actually, I got the DVD from my local library & then...

Re: And now for something completely.. er.. Different?

So it must have been about 1970 or '71 and the boss at our Olsen's Electronics had us in for a sales staff meeting at 7:00 on a Saturday morning. The main topic of the meeting seemed to be that our two main rivals, Allied Electronics and (I think) Radio Shack had merged and were to be known hencefor...

Re: Optical cable question

Bigglez, I just read the thread you referred me to & it sounds like our problems are remarkably similar with the exception that I'm trying to force the AVR into faking a surround signal. Maybe that accounts for the audible noise. Thanks for the feedback. Now just gotta see what happens. I'll upd...

Re: Optical cable question

This client is really flakey , so other than my direct observations I give little creedence to his reports & I was only there a few minutes the other day & eventually have to go back. That being said: Our AVR doesn't pop. The only indication that it has lost digital audio is the change on th...

Re: Optical cable question

OK, I've only had a few minutes to look at this so far but I was able to hear the problem. The cable TV box is connected to the Sony surround sound amp via HDMI but for reasons unknown to me the HDMI does not carry audio signal. Never did & this appears to be normal. In order to hear surround au...

Optical cable question

Good Day folks, I have a home theater client who is complaining of a switching noise when his system switches from analog audio to optical/digital audio. I replaced the optical cable with no improvement so it would appear that this noise is being generated in either the cable box or the audio amp. O...

Re: Mass wire storage solutions

I use binder clips, available in many sizes at any office supply store. The clips slip over the cable, the connector end won't slide through and, hung on the above mentioned pegboard keeps everything in view and available.

Re: LED Street Lights Unvieled In Silicon Valley

One of the problems we have here in Wisconsin is lack of heat from the incandescent bulbs. Under certain (not uncommon) conditions the snow will drift onto the lights and not enough heat is generated by the bulbs to melt them clear. I sat at an intersection & wondered if they would end up puttin...

Re: memristors?

Hackle & MrAl,
Excellent discussion. I think I finally understand.
Hackle, you made the math simple & to the point. MrAl, your motor & pot analogy seems dead on.
There, that wasn't so hard now, was it?
Seriously, thanks guys. I'm awed by the knowledge available here.

Whew, you guys make me feel alot better already. It would appear that most everyone has confusion about this & that makes my own confusion more understandable. Excellent! hakelsup is most likely correct, I understand this is nano technology & unlikely to be a discrete component. The g...

memristors?

Good Day Folks, So, I've been reading about the new device discovered or invented or whatever that is being called a memristor or maybe memistor, depending on who's writing. All I can find are what sounds like press releases and opinions expressed as fact. It would seem to be a device whose resistan...

So the other day my adult son (who lives with us) and I were working on a plumbing problem & he said "Dad, why aren't we calling a plumber to do this?" to which I replied, "Why should I pay a plumber $175-$200 when I can instruct you on how to fix our problem?" 45 minutes lat...
