Re: Anyone here ever mess with UPS's ( back up power supplies )
It may be working normally, but your measurement may be misleading. What type of meter did you use to measure the output? Most of these types of UPS's don't put out a pure sine wave. They put out a "modified sine wave" which is a lot more like a stepped square wave. A lot of simple DVM's c...

Re: ASCII in to ASCII out converter
Unfortunately, the home owner has not decided on how he wants to control things. The receiving end will most likely be a Hunter Douglas hub controlling about 25 sets of blinds. For now, he's looking at using UPB transmitters to control them, as well as about 120 lights in the house. I have access to...

ASCII in to ASCII out converter
Hi folks, I'm in need of a protocol converter to work between two pieces of equipment in an upcoming home automation project. I need a device with two RS232 serial ports. I need to be able to receive a 10 to 12 byte ASCII string on one port and send a different ASCII string response out the other po...

Re: Remote Control Light Dimmer
You're welcome ShopRat. After working in the X10 world for over 30 years, I've come to really appreciate the power of UPB. There is a bit of a learning curve, but some excellent tutorials are available on the two websites mentioned. The biggest feature is "Scenes", where you can have one t...

Re: Remote Control Light Dimmer
If you've successfully used X10 products before, take a look at UPB products. (Universal Powerline Bus). Like X10, it uses the powerline for communication, but that's where the similarity ends. UPB is MUCH more robust than X10. Stronger signal, many more features. Setup is via your computer using fr...

Re: GPS module to Serial port
Can you look at the output of the GPS module on a scope? Check the signal for two things. 1. The level. Some units only send out 0 to 5 volt signals. The serial port on the computer may require true RS232 levels of +12V to -12V. 2. Check to see if the signal is inverted. The output of the GPS module...

These guys may be of help.
Their system uses the existing fixtures, with the ballasts removed.
May be worth a look.

Re: X-10 modules - homepower question
Dac, If you're looking for a more sensitive receiver for the X10 Motion sensors try: http://wgldesigns.com/v572.html These receivers have amazing sensitivity. The version above uses a Powerline Interface to re-transmit the X10 signal on the powerline. They also have versions that spit ASCII code out...

There are a few reasons why an X10 dimmer will not work properly with fluorescents. I am assuming you're talking about the simple 2 wire dimmers like the WS467 or PLW01. These dimmers are wired in series with your load. A small amount of trickle current must flow in the circuit to keep the circuitry...
