I'm not completely sure, but isn't the common code suppose to be on all banks? (Hence, it's called the common code because all banks have that same code) So my bet would be that the common code is already included in each of the hex files for the separate banks.

I think what usually happens is that both a hardware monitor and your program gets downloaded into the target. The monitor executes your program and sends debug data back to your PC.

One of the things i like about Microchip is that they make a lot of stuff in a dip package. I agree. While Atmel has 8 bit processors in DIP, Microchip's has some 16-bit dsPIC's and PIC24's in DIP and those micro's pack in a lot of power.
