Chirs, I hadn't considered a counter IC.

Dean is right, I would ideally like to be able to use it for finding poor splices, damaged sections etc, but a simple project to determine length is a good start.

I would like to build a time domain reflectometer to use for finding problems with coaxial cables. I have used a scope and a function generator to find cable length and termination but I would like to build myself a self contained setup.
