Re: PICKit2, FTDI, and USB
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, wouldnt the Schmartboard still require soldering those extremely tiny pins? I don't know if you're familiar with them, but they're essentially breakout boards, so I guess they might not work for what you're talki...

You'll also want two other things when salvaging parts: 1. A solder popper (desoldering pump) and 2. Desoldering wick I agree that the wick is essential, although I've had bad times with budget solder-suckers. I'd personally recommend a desoldering iron. You can get them in Canadian Radioshacks (e....

Zotdoc -- That's not really a viable solution. I had a really hard time finding any case that would fit my Palm (Zire 72) in my area. I finally found one that fit from HP for a good deal ($20 for a nice leather one), and I can't return it now. Also, I'm using Linux on it, so I'm quite sure that it w...

Can you give us a bit more info? Is this purely decorative, or do the arms serve a function while the computer is on? You could use servomotors, but they can be a bit pricey. Sites like http://parallax.com sell them, although if you're in the US and don't want to pay shipping, I've seen servos for t...

I asked my optometrist about this when I last went in for an eye test. I was initially wondering whether UV LEDs were harmful to your vision, because I accidentally flashed someone with a cheapo one from my modded flashlight in the dark and he said he couldn't see for a couple of seconds. The optome...

High-current output batteries for secondary power supply
This is a continuation of the subject matter discussed here . My Palm's battery lasts a fair while, but one issue is that it has automatic wake-up whenever a button is pressed - and the buttons aren't recessed. Thus, several times a day, I have to check and see if whatever I was carrying brushed my ...

Ghetto Palm charger
I just wanted to post this, because while it is (in the words of my friend) "as ugly as sin," totally inefficient, horribly easy to break, and violating pretty much every design principle of engineering that there is... it shows what can be done on a budget if you just don't care. (note: I...

Internal P/N is possible but lot code is more likely. Means nothing to us but it allows them to trace manufacturing problems back to the wafer if necessary. I guess that could be, but it's interesting that the number is SNxxxxxN - the pre-/suffixes fit with a TI logic chip, but the actual number do...

Thanks Robert, although I had that memorized from last year's electronics courses ;) I didn't think to check the bottom, and seeing as all my TI chips have numbers on their bottoms that are related to the ones on the tops, that's what I figure it must be. I will have to make sure, though, and I'm st...
