Re: Crappy Headphone wires.......
are there any markings on that wire? Much of that construction is for flexibility and shielding, probably any cable with the right number of conductors could be substituted with some mechanical compromise. USB C cables probably have a compatible combination of conductors and flexibility, some USB mi...

Re: Compressor problem
my last test was on a solitary 20A outlet with a 3 foot run the main panel, no voltage drops there
My bet is damaged coil, shorted or open, who cares at this point. Darn, I just realized I forgot to put it on the curb Wednesday with the other metal junk, he can have it next time.

Re: Compressor problem
I'm scrapping that compressor. It has oil in the pump, it never went dry but may have begun break down, I never replaced it. For some reason the motor stall torque has gone way down. I did change the cap but stopped short of replacing the pressure switch when I observed it could not pump more than 5...

Re: Copper clad Al wire
I did get some 10 gauge I plan mostly to use with crimp connections but it seems that I should be able to solder this using lead free SAC solder alloy that contains some copper already to help prevent the thin copper cladding from dissolving in the solder. There may be other solder alloys that can w...

Copper clad Al wire
Has anyone used the copper clad aluminum hookup wire now common on Amazon (stranded hookup wire various gauges and colors). It cost half the price of 100% copper and especially for heavy gauge the savings is tempting but I think I have always used all copper wire or tinned copper. The application is...

Re: need tips on building a large screen calendar.
IMO it would be cheaper and easier to operate if you just got a regular smart TV and cast the calendar to it from a tablet or phone. R-Pi is OK if you are familiar but there are plenty of small embedded PCs running Andriod, Windows or Linux that would be easier to configure if the TV itself didn't h...

Re: 555 timer missing pin
Schematics like Art can be represented in a range of ways that are graphically quite different. Omission of unused pins on a device is common but can lead to confusion when thinking about construction. One style mimics the physical chip package and arrangement on a PCB and another style is more simp...

Re: off grid solar project
Thanks for the info, the link had some general perspective advice that was useful. I'm still collecting components, installation won't be for a month or two since I can only work on this during weekends (until daylight savings time at least when there is enough time after work). I've only just compl...

off grid solar project
I'm upgrading a shed to be a detached office thanks to working from home during the pandemic. One feature I would like to install is a small solar system mainly for lighting but maybe also for small AC loads depending on how much capacity I have left over after the lighting is selected and a run tim...

Re: Computer Photo Organizers
I'm not familiar with the photo sticks but it seems like one would need the power of a large computer on the cloud to do the kind of image recognition and sorting you crave. I think some cloud storage like facebook might do this. I expect its coming to PC but still will need a decent processor to do...

Re: HotSpot question
there are some Xfinity hotspots that are installed in public areas but the majority of hotspots are second channel WiFi from home and business account routers wherever there happens to be one. I was commenting based on the second case not knowing where your hotspot was emitted from. Rant on Cable pr...

Re: HotSpot question
My android phone in the Settings - About - Sim Card Status page, I can see the measured signal strength. (I used search in my settings to find it fast) He can look at that and log the strength over several days at fixed time intervals to figure out if signal strength is fading at any time of the day...

Re: Hacking an old TomTom
Any maps I have are over a dozen years old. Most people regard this as obsoleted by smart phones although they are useful when in poor reception areas and off road (though you can download offline maps on your phone too. If you want any files, I can send a link in PM but since I will take the materi...
