Wow, thanks for your help Al. Thanks Al, thats really helpful. Will the set-up you described be suitable for multiple temperature ranges? What I have in mind you see is a soldering iron that offers visual feedback via LED's of the temperature range the iron is in: <50 C will tell the user the iron is cooled down enough to handle...
