Re: Web Host Opinion? (No Not Spam!)
A quick check shows they have a plan for $9.95 a month, not too bad but definitely not the cheapest.

Re: Changing my religion- to linux
Looking at the specs for that computer you should be using the Xubuntu version of Ubuntu. Xubuntu is a light(er) weight version of Ubuntu that requires less resources. If you want a computer like ttat to be "zippy" you should really try Puppy Linux, DSL Linux, TinyMe Linux or some other di...

Re: Web Host Opinion? (No Not Spam!)
I've used http://www.verio.com/ and found them to be a reliable hosting company. I can't vouch for the tech support as I haven't needed it, maybe that speaks for itself. If you want dead simple site design and managed hosting give http://www.squarespace.com/ a try. They have great tools to help desi...

Re: Changing my religion- to linux
Hello Al. The Ubuntu liveCD will not harm any compfuser; can you please try on any other PC ? Is yours a Dell ? If it is a Dell do you have a PCI video card installed? I've had trouble in the past for that very reason. To fix the issue you must blacklist the Intel kernel modules. Never thought of t...

Re: Changing my religion- to linux
I not a believer yet. I tried the "Graphic Installer" and that got hung up at 74% too, but it was "locales" or something like that. I have it going again with the "Netinst" version, but I have a bad feeling about it all. The first time I tried to install it as a second...

Re: New scam (to me)
Google "419 scam". It's a sad reality that people do fall for these types of things, makes cutting the fiber coming from other countries seem like a good idea. To bad even that wouldn't stop all the spam and scam emails.

Re: question about the clamwin antivirus program,,
Clamwin doesn't seem to have that functionality in a cut and dry sort of way. You do have a few options though, you can exclude the folder containing the prank files from searches by moving the files to a flash drive, separate partition, CD-R or DVD-R. If the files share a naming convention you can ...

Re: Changing my religion- to linux
Hi, I did try the Ubuntu live, two different versions. Neither one would boot on my system. Did anything change in the past two years? A lot has changed, some for the good some for the bad. What make/model computer are you trying Ubuntu on? Report back and I think I can be of some assistance. I don...

Re: Adding D/A converters, use SPI or I2C?
I've used both protocols in PIC controlled projects and find SPI easier to implement and more straight forward to handle. If you're a proficient coder and can design a decent circuit you should have no problems with either protocol, spec limits would be the ultimate deciding factor in that case.

My I suggest you try as program titled Spinrite it's a great program that is written in machine language. I have no affiliation with this company or am taking an compensation for mentioning it, I just think it's a great program. Just Google Spinrite or go to GRC.com. If there is data still on the d...

Most likely Adobe Flash Player. Deleting Adobe flash might affect more than you would expect depending on how you normally use a computer though. If you use Firefox and not IE a better approach might be to install the add-ons Flashblock, Ad-Block Plus and/or NoScript. Noscript has a bit of a learnin...

Re: Recommendations for free web hosting
How about Link:Google Sites ? It's free, you know it will be around for a while, 10GB storage and you can store/serve just about any filetype. The only limit I've seen is that free accounts can only upload 10MB files. If you have tolerant viewers and/or family members you could always split larger f...

Re: Solid State Hard Drive Spec's
It's the same storage technology but SSDs (Solid State Discs) are solid state hard drives that connect using SATA (Haven't looked to see if a PATA version is out there). The pros being, higher reliability with no moving parts, no platters to get damaged, no head crashes, not vulnerable to stray high...

Re: Solid State Hard Drive Spec's
My guess is maybe it has something to do with wear leveling and the limited number of writes. The storage memory can be used to a point where it no longer works as intended, nothing has failed, it's just been used up (worn down?). By providing a limited warranty they limit liability for people retur...
