you could also buy a 12/6 battery, these batteries are very popular with old car buffs.
it has a battery made up of two six volt batteries, with different posts for 12 volt use and six volt use.
my frinds use them in the old willys and model t fords.

the local pet store sells special dog collars which give an adjustable level shock, these work with AA batteries, you could remove the collar and
just use the device.
look at dog hunting sites, it is a very popular training method.
