Re: 24kw AC generator frequency problem

The implication that that a 200 amp. single phase breaker has 100 amp on each pole and adds up to 200 amp. is simply crazy. 200 amp. is 200 amp. per pole for 1 pole or up to a million poles. Also, could you please load the generator? I, like the rest of the people, think that that will make all your...

Re: AC Motor

Hi rzimpala, Based on your description, it sounds like a PSC motor. A quick way to tell is to run the third winding to a 5 uf 370 volt oil capacitor and put the other side of the cap to one of the lines. If you get it across the right line it will develop some starting torque. (generally not very hi...

Re: How is power fed back into the grid?

Yeah, Terry, I have known about the possibility of cooking a lineman. I do know of a local farmer that obviously did not know ( or did not care  ) about such things. Actually what happened was the utility had connected his double throw disconnect improperly, and when he flipped it over to auxil...

Re: How is power fed back into the grid?

I understand the part of how the transformer acts as a step-up. The only question I had was how the inverter or whatever other device being used is made to "sync" with the grid. As for the million dollar panel, I think that maybe I'll need lots of solar panels to offset the panel cost :( !...

How is power fed back into the grid?

I'm a bit confused as to how power is fed back into the grid. For instance, if I have a A.C. generator, how do I get it phased right? Also, how would the D.C. output from solar cells have to be conditioned in order to supply the grid?

Re: DELCO Radio info needed

I too drive a Geo Metro. My suggestion is to turn it in to the insurance company. They will probably total the car, and then you can go get another one! If you don't like that option, you could always go to your local salvage dealer and get a used radio. If your still determined to repair the one yo...

Re: Solar panel sleight of hand

I agree with Chris that if "pissing money away" needs to be done, we need to do it at home. A good place to start would be in alternative energy. I don't believe that America has enough of land area to fill with solar panels to even dent the oil consumption, unfortunaly.

Re: non-polar capasitor value reading

Thanks Dean!
I had never quite gotten all that capacitor stuff straight! I'm cutting and pasting your piece straight to my hard drive! P.S. Hope there is no copyright! Thanks again! Sterling.

Re: AC motors Torque Vs Speed

I don't understand what you're doing, but it sounds cool! What you really need is a variable frequency drive and a gearbox. You didn't mention horsepower, so I'm not sure what kind of torque you're needing, but if you want to go that low rpm with a regular induction motor and have any torque ...

Re: What's the advantage of useing a hot air rework station

Alright philba, between me and no_vice, we're going to have you spinning your wheels! My questions, along with no_vice's, are:<p>1. I have a soldering iron. You've gotten me all fired up and I'm ready to waste some boards! But what type of solder do I use? I have some 60/40 rosin core that works gre...

What's the advantage of useing a hot air rework station

I'm looking to jump into the SMT world, and am a little confused about the hot air rework stations. What are the pro's and con's of hot air?

Re: SMT vs. TH

Good comments! I have been working with TH components. Until one fateful day I needed a such and such A/D convertor. I just up and ordered one, along with some other stuff, from Digikey. The specs said that my A/D convertor was a SMT. OK. No problem, I thought. A surface mount is a surface mount, ri...

SMT vs. TH

Hey, curosity has just right now gotten the best of me. I know, it's a bad thing to have happen, and that I should have more self control, but I've got to know if I'm missing out on something by doing all my tinkering with TH components instead of SMT's. Besides the obvious, that being the fact that...
