Re: Message Board update

My Computer has been playing games with me AGAIN! Among other things in the last day or so, this N&V forum has a new look. Is this just my computer or is it for real? PURE CRAP!

Re: Typical 0.1 μF bypass capacitor value...

The 0.1 cap is generally used whether you need it or not. Assuming you are using MLC ceramics, its good practice to install them with out much after thought. The bypass caps value depends on the rise time and bandwidth that the particular IC is going to deal with, but just as important is the trace/...

Re: Soldering tarnished terminals!

A little off topic but still related. I have seen various adds for "Aluminum solder" in my travels across the internet. Anyone have experience with these products. Might come in nice for custom chassis fabrication or special grounding situations. I own a 325 watt Weller solder pistol which may be ne...

Re: LM 1084/338/317/etc... voltage drop at < 1A

Well the 0.1 cap ought to be OK for that short of a wire length even though its mounted on the bread board and not the chip. No you will never hear VHF (30-300 MHz) on any speaker (5hz-40KHz) even if you had a trained bat. You either have a defective chip or not enough voltage headroom to its input....

Re: LM 1084/338/317/etc... voltage drop at < 1A

Try a 0.33 MLC cap from regulator input terminal to ground. Do this right at the chips pin connection. Data sheets suggest any lead over 6" should be bypassed here. You are just about borderline so this may or may not be the problem. These chips are pretty fast and can oscillate without proper bypas...

Just popped in and read your post. It took me 5 minutes to reply. I was rolling on the floor and laughing so hard, it took me a while before I could get up and hit the submit button. Great work!

Re: Demise of telephone landline

All this talk about phones - I thought I would throw my 2 cents in. In a nutshell, I have never had a better telephone than good old POTS. Absolutely perfect clarity and unmatched reliability. With all this IPod crap, the actual telephone end of it is almost an afterthought!

Re: TV Sound Circuitry

Thanks for clarification Vern. If I read you right, you are saying: 1) Head phone jack has its own demodulator (digital to analog) and audio amp. 2) Sound bar takes audio (in digital form) from a different location in the sound chain. 3) Sound bar then performs the basic tasks as the TV headset jack...

Re: TV Sound Circuitry

Thank you for the link. My TV falls smack dab in the target range here as being a year 2013 model, so I will pursue this with the phone numbers given. Then I will wait to see if an "engineer" shows up to repair it. I don't hold much hope of any success for two reasons: customer service never deliver...

TV Sound Circuitry

I purchased a LG 42" TV a couple of years ago and as expected the sound quality is horrible. I was told I needed an opto coupled "sound bar" to get better audio. This just sticks in my craw, that after dropping $500 for a TV and now they want $2-300 to get decent sound out of it. So after while of l...

Usually done by tapping into AGC circuitry- but again, you will need schematic.
