Exactly. My favorite general purpose small transistor is the MPSA06. 80v, 500ma, what's not to love? They cost about 5 cents from someplace like Jameco. (you have to buy 10 at that price though) I buy them by the hundred. And if the circuit doesn't have enough drive for the transistor, a darlington ...

Re: how to know the transistor is npn or pnp
EBC is for American transistors. Japanese numbers like 2SC945 have an E C B arrangement. Frankly I see more of them than I do 2N or MPS numbers. And I have never been sure which way Euro transistors are laid out.

Re: solarenergyandbeyond
Passive solar can be useful and cheap. Years ago, I made a 6x20 ft lean-to frame of old 2x6 boards on the south side of my Michigan home. It covered the bathroom window and the kitchen/basement door. I coverd the outside and inside with large sheets of visqueen. (clear film) On a sunny day, this gre...

Re: Price rebates
I haven't been screwed on a rebate yet. I bought a new computer recently. E-machines cheapie from Best Buy. CAme with yet another printer. I have printers coming out my ears. In any case, the rebates were in six parts, some from emachines, some from Lexmark, some from Best Buy. I got the last one to...

Sure, run it through a transistor gain stage.

Re: Rebuilding Power Tool Battery Packs
Buy the batteries with the solder tabs already on them. I priced them a while back for some daed battery pakcs. I was looking at Digikey, but never shopped further to look for prices lower. Not only can you buy them with tabs, but they will even put up groupings of them, which may or may not be help...

Re: tip42 base current
Or use a darlington. Stick a TIP 1xx in place of the TIP42. TIP125,126,127 are choices in a 5 amp and TIP105,106,107 in an 8 amp. That assumes you want PNP. They come in NPN flavors too. Running between +12 and ground in the circuit like Philba's, you would want NPN. That is low side switching. Your...

Re: My dad is not hard of hearing...
You might try testing dad with some headphones wired to something to see if he is OK with wearing the things for more than a minute. He may not like them. Good to find out before going through all the rest of it. I personally hate wearing headphones. I don't find them comfortable, and I don't like t...

Those are on the link he provided. The pot is possibly broken in the process of construction. Also check carefully for solder bridges at the pot connections.

Re: Mandatory basic knowledge for the nuts and the volts...
I told my sister I had my house checked and they found DHMO in my basement and some in the kitchen and bathroom. She was very concerned and asked if I needed a place to stay.
