Q and A Column by Russell Kincaid

Was the Q and A column discontinued and I just missed the announcement?
I think the last time it was published was back in February.

Re: Cell phones with Wi-fi ...

I cannot get my phone to be recognized as anything other than a USB device of some sort. Not a mass storage device, not a hotspot, not a phone. I cannot even get it to charge using a USB computer device or even POWERED hub. I have tried this on three Windows XP 32 bit computers, a Windows 7 64 bit c...

I miss Damien Thorm (I think that was the name). He did cell phone articles.

Re: Looking for a f%^&@#* bulb...

Possibly a victim of the phase out of incandescent bulbs. Larger Wattage bulbs 75W and 100W are already phased out. Yes, you can still find them but these are the left in stock. I think 100W bulbs were phased out in 2012 and the 75W in January 2013. If you still own them or had them in a warehouse y...

Re: Anti-fox device - Help needed!!

I was going to suggest the water sprinkler motion detector that dacflyer pointed out.

If you want to go the "firearm" route I would suggest a paint ball gun. It might bruise the fox but likely it won't severely injure or kill.

Re: USB port on television...

It depends on the TV. In some instances the USB port is for programming and diagnostics from a computer. In others you can attach devices such as a keyboard (if it is a "smart" TV for browsing). In other instances you can plug in a flash drive with media on it to play pictures, music, vide...

Re: Cell phones with Wi-fi ...

hackelsup is right on. I have a Droid RAZR. I have not made a phone call using WiFi but apparently my phone can do that. I can browse the web using the phone network (3G or 4G, depending on service). I can hop on public WiFi networks I trust and browse the web that way. I, of course, can use my home...

Re: UPS has to see AC before providing backup

I have worked on APC UPS units from 350VA to 1500VA and every one could be started without AC. (I have not tried this with the 150KVA units though. These will easily run a house.) Turning on a UPS without AC power is called "Cold Starting". Most of the time it is the method Dakflyer sugges...

Re: WHERE ARE THEY?

N&V went the same direction Radio Electronics went (almost). Radio Electronics became a computer magazine and then was reborn as Electronics Now! (Dean can correct me on this.) N&V is doing the same thing with microcontrollers. I don't want to blink an LED with a program (PIC, PicAx, Adrino,...

Here's a sample key finder. They make many types, this is just a "proof of consept". This particular model has a claimed range of 300 feet. $30. http://www.keyringer.com/ Here's another version. Check out the glasses finder. Possibly something you could tie around the turtle. http://www.fi...

Re: WHY MUST IT BE SO HARD TO FIND STUFF !

Try looking for CAR FLOOD LED. I found a bunch of them. Other terms to use (in place of car) is RV, boat, tractor, (and so on). One model is BL-FL10WM which looks similar to what you are after (and is a tractor/boat/auto version running on 12 or 24V). A site with a number of models is this one: http...

Re: FTA satellite television reception...

There are some HD FTA receivers but I have not seen what channels are available. Some terms: FTA Free To Air Analog The old style of satellite broadcasting. VERY few stations left in analog. Digicipher 2 - Encryption standard used by some broadcasters. This is a proprietary system. DVB - Digital Vid...

Re: I need a small, cheap 277vac to 12vdc LED driver

I posted this same type of request (480V LEDs) some time ago and could never find anything that worked. Finally went with 24V panel indicators and 480V to 24V step down transformers. The step down transformers are those found in industrial HVAC controllers. The 24V LEDs were AC/DC indicators. Good l...

Re: 12VDC fans in 120VAC mains ?

Be safe and do this with a wall wart! Putting LEDs or incandescent bulbs in series "Christmas Light" style is okay for them. Don't risk doing this with a muffin fan. Since we are talking muffin fans you don't need a regulated supply but it won't hurt. If these fans will in any way come in ...
