Where can I locate info on a low cost read only
rfid reader. Read ID only at a max of 50mm.

Just a real basic system is all I need for a model railroad project.

Parallax sells a serial one for about $40 USD. That seems pretty cheap. They also sell tags for $2.25 each.

Since you are in New Zealand, you might want to look at the reseller list at http://www.parallax.com/html_pages/comp ... ealand.asp .

I've found commercial readers in ebay for pretty cheap. paid $25 for one. 125 khz HID model - works to about 3 inches (75 mm). I often see the really small ones come up for sale.

There's a kit from phidgets (ca or usa) that allows you to easily read RFID tags with your computer.

I saw this first when I read about a guy who implanted an RFID tag in his hand.

I saw that too - thought it was waaaayyyy nuts. If I can't remember my password, I'll stop using computers. I like my hands the way god gave them to me...

Did you see that RFID tag was incased in a glass tube? I hope he doesn't get into a fist fight or drop something heavy on his hand.
