adding an 8 bit input port to an hc11

im tryig to add an 8 bit input port to anhc11 using a 74hc597. im able to only read the proper input from the 597 when its either 0000 or 0001 all the other possible combination of bits which is 256 withan 8 bit port will not register inthe hc11 it only reads 0000 an 0001.im using a 8 postion dipswitch as the input to the 597 with pull up resistors connected to the 8 data pins for the high level an when a switch position is closed it grounds the pin which creates the low level. im sure its not the timing that is causing this problemsince the circuit will read the first bit whether zero or 1. the hc11 is set as the slave device to allow input data thru the spi withthe 597 as the master. if anyone has any info they could pass on that as to why the hc11 only will read bit 1 id appreciate it very much.i guess it might be possible that the 597 bits 2 thru 8 are defective but the ic 597 has never been used.<p>thanks in advance
