I currently have this set sitting on the bench.

A friend dug this out of the garbage, and handed it to me.
Asking if it was worth fixing.

The set was built in Nov 2014.
The screen isn't cracked.
Wouldn't power on, but the standby light was on.
After I got the back off, I could tell right away I wasn't the first person to look at this set.
The ribbon cables from the T-con board were kinked, from someone tugging on them.
There are a few components on the Main board/Power Supply that look cooked.
Plus, the Back Light LED's seem to be burn out.

Even though most of the parts are used in several different brands of TV's.
I'm finding that each board is specifically design to fit with only a certain production run of the set!
Which means I can't just switch out the damage board for one out of another make of TV!

After just adding up just the cost of parts, and shipping.
It came up to about $200.
{And that doesn't even include my labor!}

I told my friend that a 32" LED sets cost less than that.
So, he said too go ahead and junk it.

I'm tempted to see if PTS would take it just for parts.
Hmmm.........

Slowly all the parts distributors I used changed hands and became carry out shops. You couldn't sell a CRT replacement even if you bought them dinner.
So, I got out of the entertainment electronics business over xx years (well I won't tell how many) when I realized I was going to dumpsters more than the bank, so that was the end for me.
A pickup truck load of tubes, Sams, modules, and specialized TV equipment netted about $200, from a fellow technician in an 'I feel sorry for you' deal!
Good riddance! I moved into industrial service and custom design, and never looked back....But I still have CRT and tube testers, and don't know why

this happened when the cost of labor to assemble a board fell well below its component cost. When that happens, replacements cost less than the guy who fixes them. For consumer electronics, I feel that happened by the mid 90s and changeover to SMT automated assembly. In 82, I still saw people replacing tubes and upgrading to color, not anymore. With the end of CRT, the big ticket relatively easy to break and replace part (including HV supply) was gone and with it any reason to fix a TV

i guess all the CRT companies are out of business now..
and i think only Russia and TUNG-SOL still make tubes.

While Electron tubes are resurging in Audio, I can't think of one application better served by a CRT than some kind of flat panel display.

There may be somebody restoring CRT's for legacy hardware support somewhere, can't rule that out.

The problem with the color CRT is that after 10 years of washing it's face......the colors would fade

Lenp, you lost me there, washing the front of a tube should have no effect on the image. There are plenty of other reasons though.

I guess the '10 years' part was missed!
