strange quirk with media player and outlook express

Post by dacflyer »

i have no idea where or how to fix this weird problem,
if i play any type of media (mpeg , video etc ) and then try to delete anything from my e-mail. i cannot..
i have to restart the computer before i can delete any e-mails.
and i have to do it 1st before i look at any media.
this has been going on for a long while, i just gave up on trying to find the problem,, anyone have any ideas.

its as if something in media is making it so i cannot delete any mails, also if i try to look into my sent folder, it says something like not enough memory to view this folder..but i do.. its something about the media player i think thats causing a glitch..Hmmm

That is strange. I would try the following for a start.

Navigate to your Outlook Express .dbx folders, should be a path like:

C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{DB92F7B1-C2B4-4F9A-BEA4-0AF560BE0E65}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Make sure show hidden files and folders is enabled.

Now if the above path doesn't work for your machine you can try a search. Start > Search > Files and Folders and type in Deleted Items.dbx.

You should see your Deleted Items as well as all of your OE folders. Right click the folder and choose Rename. Rename the folder Deleted ItemsOld and close out of things. Also, you can't do this with OE running.

Next time you start OE it will create a new folder. See if that helps.

Also, while you are in there try to mouseover the Sent Items folder and make sure the folder size is not greater than 1.99 GB (I doubt it is).

The only connection I can see between Windows Media Player and OE is the possibility WMP is used to play the sounds in OE. Like play a sound byte when new mail comes in or whatever. You could open OE and click Tools and choose Options. Under the general tab see if Play A Sound is checked when new mail arrives. If it is try unchecking it.

i tried all that you suggested. nothing helped. the problem only happens after i play any sort of video.. any other time i have no problems to delete mail or looking in my other mail folders.. weird, i may just have to live with it.
other than that everything else works just fine. even tho i have a old OS.
thanks.

Hi dacflyer,

Yes, this sounds very strange indeed. :???:

Have you run any Virus, or Spyware scanners on this computer?
{It's possible you may have picked up a little nasty bug.}

Also, are you still running Win98se?
Before I finally went, {kicking and screaming} to WinXP.
I saw problems with Windows IE 6, in which many of the patches for it where really designed to work for WinXP.
Thus, it was really unstable.
So, I stopped using IE altogether, and switched to Firefox as my browser.

What are you using to playing your Audio/Video files?
An old version of Windows Media Player.
RealPlayer.
Old Media Player Software that came with your computer?

You may want to browse, or pose your question here.....

The people there will be more knowledgeable than me on this subject.

Dacflyer,

Sounds to me like your media player may not be dying completely and is keeping a handle to the media file open. Check your task manager to see if it's running. If it is, end the media player process and see if OE is happy again.

no viruses here.. i have checked all that you suggested also..i too think that part of one program or another is the problem,,partially currupted file perhaps. i may try to reload IE and media player.
i know there is a glitch somewhere, but unable to pinpoint it.
i belive it may be in the media player more, because i noticed more and more, that it will not play some cd's (instructional audio.video)
but if i use the simplest audio player (mplayer ?) then i can play the cd's, but no video then.. so i belive it may be the media player. but i cannot remember, i think i tried to reload it before and had same results.. Hmmmm
i hate it when some files update automatically,, but i finally found out how to put a stop to it the otherday..lol but i guess its too late now :P

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner Dac,

Here's an article about removing WMP Version 9 from windows 98.
http://erpman1.tripod.com/current/wmp9del.htm

The big problem is the junk that WMP leaves in the registry.
If you don't clean that crap out.
When you reinstall WMP it puts those old corrupted settings back in.
Thus, WMP doesn't work correctly.

If it comes down to worst case scenario.
Backup the Hard Drive, and then wipe it clean.
Start from scratch, and reinstall the OS and the Drivers.
Then restore files from your backups.
