Re: 4 conductor miniature phone plug
Thanks for responding. No, I mean a phone plug, like at the end of the wire on walkman head phones. Only the one I need has 4 circuits or sections, not just 3.
The MP-435 on the site below is close to what I'm looking for. However, the site is in French, I can't figure out how to get at a price and I don't want to pay shipping from where ever International Dialing code 33 is. Additionally, I may need a more conical or tapered shape on the grabby part at the point where it meets the probe.
http://www.planete-composants.com/conne ... _male.html
[ January 04, 2004: Message edited by: cato ]

Interesting, cato. Never seen that one before.
If fits the need and cannot find it anywhere else, I would send them a credit card fax order with specific instructions to MAIL the part in an envelope. Extra cost will be insignificant and you will get your part.

Re: 4 conductor miniature phone plug
The only time I've ever seen more than a 3-conductor phone plug was a 4-conductor version of a 1/4" phone plug (tip, 2 rings and sleeve) used on an Ampex Micro14 portable cassette recorder, the extra two conductors used for the pause switch on the microphone.
If you need 4 conductors in a small space but aren't slaved to the 3.5mm format, try a Lemo connector.
Dean

Thanks. I'm trying to interface to a Yaesu VX-7R. They picked the connector. I'didn't.
[ January 05, 2004: Message edited by: cato ]

Re: 4 conductor miniature phone plug
Well the supplemental info clears the situation a bit more.. All of the connections might not be of need to you if you are making an interface connection/mod…e.g. like WIRES adaption.
Check these supplied URL’s and see if they are of any help to you. And then of course theres always the big sugar daddy on the end. Also check out MFJ Enterprises as they might have added it to some of their accessory cable lines(with connector).
http://www.mods.dk/mods.php3?model=vx-7r&radio=yaesu
http://www.mods.dk/mods.php3?radio=yaes ... =2879#2879

Re: 4 conductor miniature phone plug
Four wire 3.5mm phone jacks (that is Body, Ring 1, Ring 2, Tip as compared with regular stereo types with Body, Ring, Tip) are used on Yaesu VHF handheld two way ham radios such as the VX-1R. Try a Yaesu dealer (search Google)or any ham radio supply house. I got some mail order ($1.50 each) from the USA a couple of years ago but can't remember who from, but they do exist!
Good hunting!

Dudes, your killin' me man...
Of course I can buy the $11 cable from Yaesu and the assorted other connectors that would be required to connect to the $11 cable. What I'm tryin' to do is avoid that and build a custom cable that does what I need in one unit.
Ja -
Thanks for the encouragement....(If tellin' me YOU had to order the connectors from the other side of the planet is encouragment)....but your just teasin' me man.... ...
Actually the connector I need has a threaded portion..... it mates with the jack and screws to the radio to form a sealed connection that can't be pulled out...
so.... back to your catalogs and web browsing!
(But really, thanks for your replies and efforts)
3333333
[ January 07, 2004: Message edited by: cato ]
[ January 07, 2004: Message edited by: cato ]

With ONLY your Yaesu reference….niiiice unit…. I hopefully sent more data than I thought you would need, but with some supplemental info I thought that might interest you. Within the context of the prior supplied third URL down , the sourcing of a connector from Mouser is referenced.
On the second URL at its very end …if the plug had to be mod a bit as shown, hopefully a better looking unit could be produced by chucking the tip end in a Var speed electric drill and dressing it down lathe style with a Dremel motor tool with a cut off wheel and a final dressing with a fine mill file.
As for your mentioning of your OEM plugs hilt having a couple spirals of coarse threading ….never seen that before on Ham or consumer products. Some device specific aerospace equipment I was involved with..…yes.

Mouser Electronics in Mansfield, Tx…(Ft Werth I luv yew)
Stocks the ~$1.50 units
3.5 and the smaller 2.5 millipeeter dia units:

Re: 4 conductor miniature phone plug
Thanks for the extra effort Ed. That Tower electronics unit looks interesting..but $11 gee wiz.... guess I'm off to AES in the morning to get the Yaesu cable.... I sure hope this Packet stuff is all its cracket up to be.
Yeah... the VX-7R is a nice radio on paper, and even in real life to some degree.... but its full of quirks and software oversites that are drivin' me to distraction. For example, there doesn't seem to be a way to erase a channel once its programmed. You can overwrite it of course, but there doesn't seem to be away to make it blank so that it shows up as an available channel during the programming process.
3333333
Re: 4 conductor miniature phone plug
Hey! You guys forget about me? These connectors ain't gonna find themselves!
By the way, I have now seen molded versions of the connectors on those tiny earphone/microphone deals they sell for hands free cell phone operation....so, if you have broken sets feel free to cut the cables off and send them to me.
On a side note, The other end of the $11 cable I broke down and bought last weekend (CT-91 for those following along in the play book) wants to mate with two other mini audio plugs...They are two different sizes (so you don't plug the mic where the speaker is supposed to go I guess). One carries a probe diameter dimension of 3.5(greek letter phi(I think)). The other one is one carries a probe diameter dimension of 2.5 phi(I think). I'm assuming these are millimeter measurements. My friendly neighborhood RadioShack only seems to have these things dimensioned in english measures, I forget what they were.... like 3/32 i think...
Are these the same size as the metric units or are there slight differences?
[ January 16, 2004: Message edited by: cato ]

Nope...just ignoring you.... :p
You have found the R.S. mating connectors already then. The 3.5...yes..millipeters.... is rounded off to 1/8 inch and commonly classified as a miniature size. The smaller 2.5 mm size is rounded to 3/32 nds and is classified as a subminiature size.
