Hi dacflyer,
They came out of a thin film sputtering machine, made to move plates of metal through a processing chamber. Big sucker- about 30 feet long. It was "decommissioned" (scrapped) for the stainless steel.

Ya- I had an old Chevy that was prone to sputtering too! :)

Thin Film sputtering is a process to deposit thin, very controllable films of materials unto a substrate.

We were depositing Copper, Indium and Gallium on sheets of glass to make solar panels.

cool... sounds like they were the Amorphous type, or thin film technology.

Amorphous solar cells are thin film silicon, ours are CIGS: Copper, Indium, Gallium and Selenium.

Just a jump in here...
I saw selenium mentioned and remembered that many years ago, if a selenium rectifier was dissembled, the paint was stripped and contact was made to both sides of a plate you had a primitive solar cell. Guess i'm just a bit surprised it took so long to get from there to here with the technology!

Yes, there are many combinations of materials that exhibit the photoelectric effect, besides selenium. The tricky bit is to get enough conversion efficiency to make building it worthwhile.
