Wanted Geiger Muller tubes

Needless to say I would like to build a Geiger Counter/Radiation meter of some sort. I am looking for a good tube that would be appropriate for the fallout from the Japanese power plants. Perhaps a Lionel 700 type replacement? I have not committed to a particular design. I would like to stay away from circuits that use odd ball batteries. I would prefer to power it with D cells, or some other common type.
If you know where I can get them, from a US source, I would appreciate it.
