A recording radiation counter

Hello all,
My first post and have enjoyed the good info on other articles and projects.....thanks.
My question is after building this radiation kit is I have no high voltage output to the tube or speaker sounds.
I measured for voltage as stated in article using a 100 meg resistor and also touched the output with no shock felt.
The display shows all the functions as its supposed to except obviously not counting.
I replaced the zener to no effect and made sure it is the right voltage for the tube I am using.
Can someone give me an idea where to start replacing components?
I am not a total newbie but not sure what to try first.
