Dec. 2014 Wishing You a Very Random Christmas

Post by ehsjr »

As stated in the article "Your safety and the safety of others should be the first priority as you build this project." There are some safety issues that can be eliminated by using UL listed electrical enclosures.
A 3 gang weatherproof electrical junction box such as Garvin WP3G507 <http://www.garvinindustries.com/weather ... ifications>
would be a far sturdier and safer enclosure than a food storage container mentioned in the article. The junction box costs more, but it won't be as easily opened or crushed if stepped on as the food storage container. It can easily be connected to 2 two gang weather proof junction boxes, each housing 2 duplex receptacle for a total of eight individually controllable outlets that the lights can plug into. (You can split a duplex receptacle into two individual receptacles by cutting a strap on the receptacle.) That eliminates the cut extension cords and makes it easier to get the neutral/hot polarity correct. Weatherproof receptacle covers complete the installation.

Thanks Ed for your comments on enclosures. As stated in the article if contact with the enclosure is possible a more secure alternative should be used. Carlon also has waterproof junction boxes that could contain the circuitry and connected, as you suggested, to two gang waterproof boxes with waterproof receptacle covers. Chose the one for your size needs but an example is E989N-CAR http://www.amazon.com/Carlon-E989N-CAR- ... B0037MZW1A, you can also pick these up at Home Depot http://www.homedepot.com/p/Carlon-8-in- ... hnZ1z116nv

The outlet boxes should be mounted vertically to maintain waterproof rating.

Thanks again Ed for your post.
