(Optical) Motion Detector

I'm looking for a very low power, sensitive, stable circuit fragment to detect motion at a distance of approximately 1 1/2 to 2 inches.<p>The sensor should work equally well in daylight or total darkness, and interface with digital logic, operating in the range of 5 to 12 VDC, with a current drain in the 1 mA or less range.<p>I'm thinking maybe a photo transistor receiver with an infrared LED transmitter, which when the path is broken, indicates intrusion, perhaps connected to a Darlington transistor.
