I need some wireless help and or advice.. lemme preach on...

Post by dacflyer »

i need to extend wifi from a barn to a ranch hands quarters, the barn is linked to the owners house bout 2,000ft away, and it goes into a linksys WRT54G type router, and gives wifi to the barn..
but now i need to extend (outdoor proof ) about 500ft.
i thought i had the perfect solution, using a ubiquity Picostation 2HP. but later found out, they have to operate with other ubiquity radios. i thought i could set it up and use it as a hotspot or AP, how ever the proper word for it is..

so can anyone suggest a transmitter that is weather proof to use ?
was also thinking to use a extension cable for one of the antennas. but not sure how that'd hold up.
i could mount the antenna at the end of the barn, roof edge.. but i do not know if there are limitations on length and loss.
i'd rather have something i can connect to the router and the device be mounted outdoors.

send suggestions thanks..

what speed, 2400 only or also 5Ghz? This one looks easy to install and configure there is also an N300 version that's a little cheaper

Or maybe this TP link one

I leave it to you to qualify the range, you may need more than one to bridge the gap

If you want to run a wire, A MoCA can be run using Coax that is otherwise obsolete for TV signals if there is an old Cable in place.

Or maybe you can look into a microwave link then feed that into the repeater. but maybe overkill with its 25km range. It is affordable though. the vendor has other similar products maybe more suitable

well, turns out the Ubiquiti Picostation is good for about 500ft i think i read,
i did finally get it to work. i didn't set it up right.. Novice mistake.
one thing i did find out is, that if the device's wifi is turned off, the picostation goes to sleep. was interesting to learn. at 1st i thought it still wasn't going to work, then i saw the SSID show up, once i connected, the wifi leds on the radio lit up.
( strength meter )
so i think i got it solved...
thanks anyway..
