Help Finding a Rotary Encoder for Simple Arduino project?

Post by lindula »

Hello, I saw this really cool and simple project using an Arduino and a photo sensor to detect motor rotation. Here is the web link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPBKTZw_xi4

I would like to do the same project but I don't know what part number for the rotary encode he used. Please check out this video and if you could recommend any photo sensors please let me know.

Thanks,
Joe

You need two transmissive optical switches, either IC output or photo transistor output. Here is link to a page of IC types -

The toothed disk in the video looks hand-made. Perhaps you can find a manufactured one in an on-line catalog.

Reflective might be easier. The disk can be painted with alternate flat black and white "teeth" instead of cut.

Another type of transmissive disk may be made with clear plastic with alternate flat black and clear "teeth"

Go to a Thrift Store, and look for an old Optical Serial{Wired} PC\MAC Mouse.

It will have the sensors and encoder wheels already in it.
