DirecTV/ATT {Warning: THIS IS A RANT!}

Post by Janitor Tzap »

For the past 4 months I have been getting phone calls from DirecTV {Mumbai India!}.

Each one has been a promotional for getting me to upgrade my satellite equipment.
But if I do that.
None of the older televisions I have, will work with their newer receiver box's.
Which I checked, and the receiver box's they want me to upgrade too don't have RCA Output Jacks, or a Channel 3/4 RF Output Jack.

I told them, I'm not going to replace all my old televisions, just so they can upgrade my satellite equipment.
But they just can't seem to comprehend this fact, and keep trying to get me to upgrade anyway!

I've gone to the website, to see if there is any reason to be concerned about this.
But there is nothing about having to do a forced upgrade to newer satellite equipment.

If they keep bugging me about it.
I will just cancel my subscription with them.
Because I've currently got some 50 Over Air Television channels that are available that I can watch for free.
And there are only about maybe 10 channels on DirecTv, that I actually even watch.
So, it would be no big loss.

Hi JTzap.
I would like them to call me to offer their services...

First, you have to ask the credit card number to the telemarketer calling. When they ask why? You say that your time is $60/hour if they want to talk to you, minimum 1 hour. Much cheaper than a lawyer.

Or, ask the telemarketer if the programming/plan they are pushing for is free of advertisements... As their answer is no; ask why do you have to fill their pockets by watching commercials !

Get rid of those services if you have so much channels over the air. Am back to FTA, have two 8 feet dishes on C and Ku bands.

i used to have C/Ku satellite ( analog ) but i had to get rid of my system after it all went digital, as i was not able to afford a 900.00 digital system upgrade. ( new receiver and feed horn. )
but i loved it when i was able to get on wild feeds before they made it to the news rooms, or i could still watch what the race was doing while the rest of the world had to watch the commercials..lol
i also had a descrambler,, sort of.. it would descramble some channels, but they had no sound, but hey,, for what i was watching, i could make my own sounds..lol...

Hi dacflyer.
$900 !!!
The digital receiver I have was $45, new, 2 years ago. And it is the "Premium" ! Exactly like this one , the size of half a pack of cigarettes ! :

Just saw this one in Florida ebay. It is a X2 brand. I think they sold out and a new model is coming. If you dumped your BUD, you are fried. If it is still planted in your backyard, may want one. Its LNB and feedhorn are good for digital.

My one uncle does the same thing, only he charges them $120 an hour.

I got curious, and started searching for any scams that were being run by DirecTv, or some other scammers.

Well, it turns out there are both going on!

Feds accuse DirecTV of pricing scam!
http://thehill.com/policy/technology/23 ... icing-scam

Scammers calling as Directv Rep!
http://www.dbstalk.com/topic/211342-sca ... rectv-rep/

Thou, if you keep digging.......
You'll find far more scamming that is being done by DirecTv then Scammers.

After reading some of the horror stories, that people have had with DirecTv.
I know why they are bugging me to upgrade.

My two year license term agreement is up.
By upgrading just the receivers, or replacing a piece of defective equipment.
They can renew the two year license term agreement, and can charge the $350 early disconnect fee.
If I try to drop their service. :x

Of course they don't notify you about this. :x

FTA???

Is that one of those so called free satellite systems?

Dish & DirecTv have locked up the market around here.
Except for the local Over Air Stations.

Hi.
FTA = Free To Air; uses the BUD = Big Ugly Dish; and operates in C band = 4GHz and Ku band = 11 GHz; a bunch of satellites transmit private, commercial, public programming, free and pay, in many languages, from/to many countries, multiple content.
Free TV programming from satellites since the eighties before cable, Dish Network, DirectTV.

This afternoon I saw the football game Holland - Atlético Madrid, and a Mexican comic program advertising an efervescent supository to beat the flu  Am still laughing... Right now Star Trek, as Wonder Woman ended, and later will be Columbo, Addams family...

externet >> i got rid of the units over 10 yrs ago.. i still have the old equipment, except for the B.U.D.
well the dish got removed and i still kept and re-purposed the mount, turned it into a sun tracker rack for my solar panels.
it worked great.
but then i later sold it to buy more panels and a new grid tie inverter.

Hmmm............

Very interesting......

Back in the 80's.
I knew a guy who had a 8Ft Dish C band = 4GHz and Ku band = 11 GHz receiver setup.
He was picking up the live network feeds.
As well as from the satellite trucks that were beaming stories back to the local stations.
Plus, he could get all kinds of channels.

But some time around 86 to 88 the networks switched to digital scrambling,
and you couldn't watch the feeds, unless you got a descrambler and paid a monthly fee.

I don't know if he still has his dish setup.
But the last I talked too him, he was considering dropping the satellite pay service, and looking at cable.
Since a cable company had just finished wiring the area.
Plus, the price was reasonable compared to what he was paying for his satellite equipment, and monthly descrambler fee.

Yeah, I've got THISTV available here from a local Over Air Station too.
Plus, I get:
CBS
ABC
NBC
FOX
PBS{3 channels}
DAY
CW
MyTV
ION
IONLIFE
TELMUN {Low power}
UNI {Low power}
MeTv
Get TV
GRIT
H&I
Movies Channel
QUBO
DECADES
BUZZR
(2)Weather Channels
TBN
SHOP
QVC
HSN
{Plus, a dozen more low power channels}
And coming in March a new channel will be coming; Comet

So, yeah I have plenty of channels I can watch for free.
Just wish I could get a local listing of all the channels with show listings.
Not even the local version of TVGuide covers all the stations here.

With all that list on the air, dump DirecTV. FTA would not give you much more unless you understand farsi, tagalog, german...
Seems you are in a big metropolis with so much over the air.

Actually, I'm in a rural farm area.
I just have a very good amplified omni directional antenna. :)

It's an old Radio Shack outdoor amplified omni directional antenna.
Had to turn it when setting it up, to get the best signal strength for the stations that were the farthest way from me.
But once I got it setup, haven't had to mess with it. :)

Here is the full setup.
