Lithium battery with no cell sensing for charge monitoring..

Post by Externet »

Hi fellows.
Came across this coming battery while investigating solar panels with built-in microinverters :

No more complex circuits for charging Lithium batteries ?? Good for automobiles, as claimed.

This microinverter new trend built-in solar panels is interesting. Until sunset.

Could the microinverters be used at each storage battery end instead of at the solar panel ? Do you know anything about ?

Hi

Looks interesting but seemed like it still needed some kind of charge management?

You'd have to do the math to determine what battery capacity would be best at each solar panel to gain full effect of sunshine time while not discharging the battery beyond its recommended lower level of charge. And yes, a charge controller is essential at each battery.

Hi John... we are not on the same page...

The new trend microinverters are to be attached under each panel, and their outputs go in parallel feeding the mains.
----> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzTk7JJTptM
----> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YQ4vgUvjYA

panel---->microinverter-----> mains
panel---->microinverter-----> mains
.....
.....
panel---->microinverter----> mains
[this system feeds power back into the grid only during daylight and the dwelling uses the grid at nights - no batteries-]

What i wonder is, instead,
Each panel (or a few in parallel) feeding one 12V battery. The microinverters get their input from each battery and feed the mains.

panel----> battery------microinverter----->mains
panel----> battery------microinverter----->mains
....
....
panel----> battery------microinverter----->mains
[This way feeds the dwelling day and night]

===============================
About the Lithium batteries, their web site just tells to charge between 14V and 17V and they will be happy.
===============================

How is your solar system doing ? Got a snow blower for it ?

I hear you loud and clear. Few issues:
Depending on which technology your solar panels are using, you must select a charge controller to match the output of the panel to your battery. Some panels output 18 volts, some much more. The charge controller must match the source (panel) with the load (battery) and adjust for Pmax (Maximum Power Point Tracking), without overcharging the battery, or allowing the battery to become depleted too much.
Then you can tap into the battery banks with your microinverters to get 120 VAC out, day or night.

Where would you put the batteries? Closest to the panels would be best- does that mean on your roof?

Research "Off Grid Solar" for more info on batteries, controllers, etc.

The snow finally melted off (not long ago!). I did install an oscillating sprinkler on top of the array to wash off the pollen, dust and detritus that seems to constantly bombard the panels. Works fine, plus i don't have to go up there to clean them now, just turn a faucet! The neighbors like the display too. Next I'll add a color wheel! :grin:

Batteries constantly come up on this forum. I found this interesting article in NASA tech briefs comparing 6 lithium technologies to Alkaline batteries. The chart on page 2 I find to be very interesting but may not be complete.
