Webcam recording

Seems like it should be easy to allow my webcam to do a recording, but apparently I need additional software to do that. Using XP Pro.
Found a few sites that will sell me software to record from my webcam, but that seems unnecessary.
Is there software out there that doesn't cost anything to record from my webcam?
Nothing fancy needed, basic video recording only.
