Printer Unfriendly Websites........

Post by Janitor Tzap »

I went out to this website; http://www.bluegooseonmillelacs.com/Launch.html
to check on possibly chartering a boat.

I tried to print out the Web Page, and all I got was a blank sheet of paper.
At first I thought the Toner Cartridge finally ran out.
{Samsung ML2510: The Toner out light has been blinking for months now.}
So I broke out a new Toner Cartridge, and replaced the old one.
Still a blank sheet.
Switched to my old reliable HP IIIp.
Even it printed a blank sheet.
Now I'm thinking that maybe a Virus has killed the Print Spooler,
or messed up the printer drivers.
I decide to go to another website and see if I can print it out.
I can from either Printer.
I then go back to the web page and take a screen shot.
and pasted it into MSPaint.
It's not pretty, but I got the info I needed, and I printed out the screen shot.

Well, luckily I didn't throw out the old Toner Cartridge right away.
It probably still has about a hundred pages left to print out. :P

Whenever I run into a site that doesn't have a "Printer Friendly" button, I
highlight what I want to print and use the "Print Selection" option when the
printer dialog pops up. Saves a lot of headaches (and money...).

That doesn't work with that website.
Go take the link, and see for yourself.

Well, I followed my steps and printed to a PDF (this comp isn't hooked to a printer)
and it all printed out. I don't have an attachment button or website (at the moment)
to post it to, so if you want to see it I'll have to email you.

So you did a screen capture, saving it to a PDF file.
But that is basically the same as me doing a screen capture, and saving it as BMP file.
That can be moved to any computer.
Which will let you also too be able to print it.

You didn't mention this step in your earlier posting.

No, I highlighted the area I wanted to print by placing my mouse
pointer at the beginning of the area of interest (in this case, the
upper left corner) and then left click (and hold) and drag to the
end of the area of interest (lower right corner). This will turn
everything that is selectable, on that page, that is encompassed
by those 2 points, a shade of blue / be boxed by a blue shadow.
Next I clicked "File->Print" and chose my printer from the dialog
box. Then I looked just below and to the left of the printer choices
and clicked the radio button for "Selection" under "Page Range".
At this point, I checked to see if I still had blue shadow on the page
(it WILL disappear if you even click once on the page without
holding the left mouse button). Finally I clicked the "Print" button at
the bottom of the dialog box.

In essence, all I did was make a selection, the same as you would
when you want to copy something to the clipboard. The only difference
is that I printed it instead of copying it.

I see your using Windows Internet Explorer.
That may be the problem, since I'm using FireFox.
Some websites want Internet Explorer to be used to access it.
I know I have too use IE when I go out to Microsoft's website,
and some other sites that use only IE.
Because of the hosting software.
Or the website software itself uses certain applications that are not compatible with other browsers.

My son uses Firefox and he was able to get it to scale correctly
in print preview at 60%. Otherwise it did a partial page. You nailed
it, Firefox is the culprit. Can you scale it when you go to print,
something like autosize/autorotate/autocenter or autoscale or fit
to page? Most printers have something like that, possibly under the
Preferences tab. Take a look, maybe it'll happen this time...

Good luck,

Yeah,
FireFox does have a "Fit to Page", and a "Print Scaling".
Which I found was set to 80%.
I'll try the "Fit to Page" and see how that fairs.

Edit:
Nope, still the same.

I'll crank up IE and try it.

I've been to a couple of those web pages that won't let you print, but the ones worse than that are the ones that say "Printer Friendly" or Print this page, then you get 15 pages of advertisements.. and usually your coupon spread across two pages...
