Okay, it is possible.

Had to follow several links on page that Verns link goes to to get actual instructions at:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articl ... usbin.html

Short version - buy/install NET-Linq box to connect PCs via USB, then set up IP and File/Print sharing like you'd have to do for Ethernet anyway; with the same possible problem with scanning from 2nd PC.

For extra expense and effort you have a 500K Byte (4M bit) link instead of 10M bit, 100M bit or 1G bit of Ethernet.

dacflyer,

For print AND SCANNING from either PC, I still suggest:
1. Move the USB cable. OR
2. USB A-B switch for printer/scanner USB cable. OR
3. If you scan most often from one PC, connect printer to that one and printer share over LAN to other PC.

If Ethernet port is broken/nonexistant on a PC, buy a USB Ethernet adaptor.

Cheers,
Dale Y

dyarker >> yes i think the best to do is to use a USB switch, just have to remember to dismount the unit before unplugging so i do not get the angry signs popping up etc.

The March 2011 issue of Everyday Practical Electronics has an article on building a 'Manual 2-Way USB Device Switch'
for connecting 2 computers to 1 peripheral. More info on request.
Do you need a full blown LAN? I don't know about Apple, but Windows will allow you to set up an ad hoc network with
just a Cat5 crossover cable. Works great for me as a two-computer network.

I know it's almost a month later, but I wanted to share a find with you.

In the current MCM Electronics sale catalog (expires May 15, 2011, source code A10424),
there are 2 USB Sharing Hubs with File Transfer Function (made for and distributed by MCM),
PN 83-11581 (2 device) on sale for $32.99 and
PN 83-11852 (4 device) on sale for $59.99
along with the IOGear ones mentioned earlier.

I'm sure there are many other places out there, TigerDirect and Newegg being 2 off the top
of my head, that have these types of devices and more.

Never hurts to look around...
