lat top cooling controls ??

i have a toshiba satellite laptop. the cpu fan when its on, blows extreme heat out of it.. i cm curious is there anywhere in this thing , that i can set, so the cpu cooling fan runs longer or just turn it full on.. i'd think that if the fan ran longer, this thing would not get so hot..
it does run for a while then cycled on/off.
i know these run quite warm, but it feels as if i could use it as a hot plate..lol

Have you tried to access the BIO's?

Normally the power, fan, & CPU controls should be there.
Or there maybe is some utility software that has to be loaded into the Laptop to access the fan, power, and CPU.

Yeah,
I know of many people who are using them because their Laptops run so hot.

A lot of the problem has to do with the design of the Laptop.
The CPU's that they use are a lot of times made for desktop units.
Plus, running high end Video Graphic's chipsets, and 7200rpm Hard Drives.
Will really generate a lot of heat.
Thus, they try to cram in the biggest fan, or blower that they can into the case.

Other than getting a cooling pad like gerty has suggested.
You should clean out the air vent holes with compressed air, getting rid of dust that has collected on the fan/blower blades, and clearing open the air vent holes.

Ramping down the CPU's speed, will lessen the amount of heat it generates.
But, it will also effect the performance.

Ramping down the Video Chipset CPU's speed, will lessen the amount of heat it generates.
But, it to will also effect the performance.

Changing the Hard Drive to a 5400rpm or/ multi-speed will help as well.
But, of course it will also effect the Laptops performance.

One Laptop I saw some years ago now, had an aluminum case which acted as
a heatsink for the CPU.
Now this was a 386 or 486 based Laptop.
So cooling wasn't much of a problem back then.

Thou, it seems strange that manufacturers don't make something like that now.
{Probably cost of aluminum, and weight}

lets not forget running the fans too much will reduce battery life. I noticed that some laptops can change certain settings when it is on battery or on charger. fan and CPU speed seem to be among them

There was a story circulating yesterday about how laptops shouldn't really be used upon ones lap for long:

Furthermore, one should not use a laptop on a soft surface like a bed or couch since these can block air flow. Also stuffing a laptop in standby into a bag can significantly shorten the life of the battery, the CPU or even the display inverter. In general, they should easily tolerate the heat they generate when able to breath freely though we may not.

my lappy is clean, it just runs hot.
i may look into getting a cooling plate, do they attach to the lappy, or does it just sit on top ?

i did hear yesterday about toasted legg syndrom from laptops.. them buggers do keep ya toasty.
i bet i could use my lappy to iron clothing or make a grilled cheeze sammich

There have been reports of the keypads on Toshiba Satellite Laptops getting hot as well.

I found that there are utilities available, that should of come with your Laptop on a CD.
And on the CD there is should be a PDF file of the manual.
Some of these utilities may of been pre-loaded onto the hard drive.

If you can't find it, go out to the support site and down load it.

i looked into the site before, nothing for fan controls.

also this lappy was a junker given to me,, it had a bad HD and battery, replaced them both and a friend loaded xp and drivers..
this works fine, i was just wondering if there was a way to make fan run longer. appears not.
so i will look into the fan pad..

I pulled up the PDF Manual, and started reading through it.

Yeah,
there doesn't seem to be a way too control the fan directly.
It only mentions adjustments too the CPU, and Battery to conserve power.

Sometimes you'll find this stuff buried in download-able programs.

If you have already looked at these,
and there is nothing included about fan operation in any of them.
Then I guess a Cooling Pad is your only option.
