PCIe x1 slots, what are they good for?

Post by MrAl »

Hi there,

Anyone here ever use a PCIe x1 slot for anything? These are the small connectors
on the motherboard and the manual would spec them as x1 rather than x8 or x16,
which use larger connectors.

I ask because i see things on the web that require at least x4 slots (same size)
and that means x1 wont work.
For example, there are x4 slot USB 3.0 (yes that is 3.0 not 2.0) adapter cards and they
certainly would not work in an x1 slot, and i would not want to use an x8 or x16 slot
just for that, and the only other slots available are x1 slots.

I'm not completely sure...
But I'll give it a shot.
:P

PCIe={PCI (E)xpress} have been mainly used for video cards only.

But with more bandwidth hungry devices like "Flash Hard drives" and USB 3.0 coming out.
Also, gamers linking together video cards for faster,
and more realistic action while playing there favorite games.
Streaming video applications, video capture applications , photo imaging applications, and some high end CAD applications.

This has Mother Board makers scrambling to make main boards with more available slots.

This could be quite a big change going to this; newer slot style and faster bus speed.
Making many people ditch their current computers, for the newer standard. :(

Hi Janitor,

The only pc cards i could find that give you USB 3.0 were PCI-E x8 or maybe x16, but none with x1.

Ok,
I've done some searching.
Here is a card that newegg has that is suppose to be PCI-E X1 USB 3.0.

Here's JDR site that carries some PCI-E X1 cards.

Here's a graphic of the PCI-E slots.

Maybe this will help you?
