Text Messaging When in Need - February 2017

Regarding Mr. Hoffman's request for a text message triggered by a remote control fob, there are a couple options that could work.

1. via WiFi using IFTTT
Use a microcontroller board interface to "If this then that" (IFTTT) via WiFi. I'm not that familiar with IFTTT, but I was reading about a water sensor that used it to send SMS messages here: https://www.sparkfun.com/news/2297
This project could be adapted to respond to a contact closure.

2. Arduino with GSM radio shield
This is a more self-contained solution but would require a cell subscription. There are several Arduino shields available that can communicate via SMS.
For example: https://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/ArduinoGSMShield
The Arduino library is easy to use. There is an example program (sketch in Arduino terminology) at that link under "Getting Started" -> "Sending an SMS message".
