USB to Ethernet Bridge

Post by dhpalmer » Sat Jan 11, 2014 5:35 pm

Bought a new Samsung LED TV. It has a USB slot for storage of video files and I have copies a folder with a avi file and played it.
I would like to interface this to my switcher/router so as to access my WD MyBookLive. That would allow me to play videos without having the computer on. It seems the device (or bridge) would had to present to the TV side (USB) as mass storage and act as a PC with a NIC on the Ethernet side. Any help or advise if something like this is already available off the shelf or not to hard to make. I prefer something using MicroChips as I am familiar with them.
Thanks.

there's no easy way to do what you want with just simple microcontrollers and such, most TVs are set up so they can detect various storage devices, but that's about it, just keep the software simplicity to a basic level. The easiest way I can think of doing what your talking about is use a device like a media center system and just have it connected up through that. I use close to what your using, and I use a raspberry pi to watch the stuff over the network with it running openelec (xbmc).

Bummer. I too have a RPi but don't want to tie it up for just that.

the issue is that the tvs and various consumer devices are designed to be very minimal on software, aka drivers, so they dont include drivers for extra stuff like various network cards and such, also on top of that, it would need to handle the tcp stack and everything else, so TV makers just include what they need to get storage mediums to work, and that's it.

OK, I think I see what you are saying. The device from MicroChips only passes communications thru it, and what I would need would have to present to the TV side a Mass Storage USB device.

Looks like a PIC32MX695F512H and some programming will do the job ??
