As some readers know, I'm working on a PhD in science education. Yesterday my study was approved. Yippee!!

I will be analyzing the effect that BalloonSats and gender have on student attitude toward science. To do so, I am assemblying 30 BalloonSat kits that I will distribute free to school classrooms. The science attitude survey used in the study is called the test of science related attitutudes (TOSRA). Student teams will have six weeks to design, build, and test a BalloonSat. The kit includes three sensor arrays, camera, and programmable flight computer. Only one sensor array can be used per flight and the camera can be pointed in any direction. The flight computer controls the collection of data and the camera. In March I plan to launch all 30 Balloonsats on four weather balloons. After they are recoved, students will have two weeks to anaylze the d ata and produce their science report.

There's light at the end of the tunnel of this PhD!!

Onwards and upwards
